Third John Brawley BMPCC test

Hmm. Not all that impressed with this piece. It just looks like GH2 footage here. Not even that great of GH2 footage.

I have 2 pockets on order, I will do some side by sides with my hacked GH2.
Well said Michael, because I have three GH series units and even if that's my fav cam for stills included where RAW is there BTW, to compare it with motion picture RAW is just plain silly :-)

Just the ability to shoot ProRes is what attracts me to the Pocket. I luv my GH2 but still having to transcode is another step. Hopefully the pocket will ship with RAW.
I still do a lot of still shooting. I was using a Nikon D200, went to a Canon, tried the still capability of the GH2 and now I am back to Nikon for stills.

I respectfully disagree. If you notice none of the light sources are blown out, you can even see the details on LCD screens, while also maintaining detail in dark areas. There is no footage from GH2 that I have seen, that can achieve that. The DR alone leaves GH2 in the dust. People just are used to blown highlights and out of focus crap- what I call youtube cinema. As the matter of fact it looks nothing like any DSLR footage. This is something you can compare to Alexa not GH2.
Your argument is like a guy eating in a 5 star restaurant and trying to convince others that McDonalds food is better.

A few months ago I wouldn't be interested.
But since getting the GH3 for slow motion and building a kit of Oly and Panny primes for it, this camera becomes a no brainer.
The Oly 45mm 1.8 he was shooting has become one of my favorite lenses for any camera.
Granted it will become a 135mm on the BMPC, but it will be an epic tele.

BMPCC is not RAW.

60p doesn't gain you much. For real good looking slow motion you'll need minimum 120fps. 60p is a consumer rate, everyone is just used to, because there was nothing else. If you compare FS700 at 240fps, it makes everything filmed at 60 look like garbage. Far better option would be to have something like 240 fps 8 or 10 second burst.

Yeah, the lack of overcrank options is a bit limiting. Then again, it's a highly unobtrusive, 1080p raw (eventually) camera for less than $1000, so it almost seems petty to complain. I suppose that you could pick up an LX7 and get 120fps for slo-mo that way. Getting footage from the two cams to match might be a little challenging, but the cost of the two combined is only around $1500. That seems like a pretty potent combo, to me.

For anyone like me who was underwhelmed by the version that plays on Brawleys blog when you click on the play button, then enable full screen. Looks way better played directly on the Vimeo page. The one on the blog looks the same as the direct Vimeo version if you click on the blue Pocket Camera link and go to Vimeo....if you don't and just hit play and enable full screen, it looks pretty bad.

Better yet, on a Smart TV or using Apple TV - look at it on your large LCD, looks stunning.

Not much details in this video, I expected more sharp details with used lenses. Unfortunately its not for download so hard to tell.

That approach makes it sound like you're just looking for the next fix. The excitement of seeing something for the first time (eg 240fps) doesn't render everything else "garbage". Frame rate is one choice of many that filmmakers have to choose between, which as you know includes lighting, camera movement, set/location, makeup, acting choices, film stock...and the list goes on. Whatever frame rate suits the project is the best frame rate for that project. A significant percentage of this piece was shot offspeed, but I don't think it would have benefited from 240fps...

That has been the case for all 3 videos John has posted. The colours and dr are a step up, but the cam seems lower res. Maybe it's how John is uploading them, or maybe lower res is the trade off for this price point.

It is a 1080p native Bayer sensor camera. 1/3rd less resolution than the original BMCC and the internal debayer to prores encode is not great. Still a very handy usable camera shooting a high quality codec, that alone is unique in its price range. I consider it like a step up from a GoPro, though rolling shutter may not be so good for fast action.
They are supposed to add a compressedDNG raw codec to it at some point. It won't be uncompressed raw like the BMCC.
