Thinking of selling my 60d for a 5d Mark II = Thoughts?

2 things I will be missing are the articulating screen and 60fps. Something I will be gaining though is a full frame sensor and I just love the way the images look.

I can probably get about $700-800 for my 60d if I'm lucky and would buy a used 5d Mark II which sell for about $1900-$2100 and would pay out of pocket about $1200 to upgrade to this camera.

Thoughts?

Most people can't see the difference between ff and crop video.

Your stills will suffer.

I wouldn't do it.

I have been doing a lot of reading and it looks like I may just hold onto my 60d for a whole longer. Maybe upgrade when the new 7d or 60d version comes out. Might just use the extra money and buy myself a lens or shoulder rig.

Yeah plus if you do a lot of video you'll really feel the pain of the non-articulating screen on the 5DM2 coming from the 60D.

As far as video goes, there's not a huge difference between the two so it makes a lot more sense to me to invest in more lenses rather than swapping bodies. A lot of people go nuts for the 5Dii because it has an even shallower DoF but frankly the DoF of the 60D and 7D is the same as any Super 35mm movie (or those shot with the Red, Alexa, Genisis, ect) so I don't get the big deal. The 5D will function better in low light which is a plus. Also, you get a wider FoV which can be useful. Beyond that, I'd say stick to the 60D.

5Dm2's are going for $1999- _new_.

There's some things you can do with a 5Dm2 that you can't with a 60D, like shooting with a 24/1.4 or 50/1.2 or 35/1.4 (you can get equivilent FOV, but not at those apertures).

Please explain.

A crop body uses only the "sweet spot" of an EF lens. FF uses more of it, which includes its weaker parts. But I guess a more accurate statement would say that your stills will suffer and benefit (due to FF's benefits, such as light-gathering).

I'm not against FF; I have a 5Di. I just don't think it's worthwhile to trade up to it. You can get a refurbished 5dii for $2000 now. If the OP had said he wants a second body and he needs it to be FF for various reasons pertaining to FF's strengths, I think it would make sense.

I've actually been thinking of doing the same thing but I've been really up in there about it. Love the idea of extra light sensitivity and the ability to use particular focal lengths at fast apertures that I wouldn't be able to do with APS-C.

If those movies happened to use anamorphic lenses then the 5d is a way better match. And anamorphic lenses are used all the time because of the look (a 30mm becomes very wide and still has the same DOF characteristics). If you do 2.35:1 then the 5d will be a lot closer to cinema anamorphic look.

5d is also slightly sharper than the aps-c variants. It definitely looks nicer.

In stills or video?

In stills, certainly since it is a bigger sensor with a higher megapixel count.

In video, all tests have shown that they are the same since they both have sensors with FAR higher pixel counts than 1080p and neither has particularly good downsampling (and all suffer from sever aliasing).

The concept of the 5Dii just "looking nicer" or having that "magic look" I've found to be horribly exagerated. A lot of people prefer it because of the shallower DoF but there are plenty of us who don't think a super-shallow DoF is the best thing since sliced bread and find the DoF of the APS-C sensors (which is the same as any Super 35mm film or the Red, Genisis, Alexa, ect) to be just fine.
