Hello folks,

If your thinking of asking Santa for one of those MKV Directors View Finders......STOP.

For less than $30 (US) you can turn your swanky new iphone into one instead, using it's onboard Camera. WooHoo.

I'm not connected in any way shape or form with the company that has developed this app (they're also behind the Helios Sun Finder app) but have to say they are very responsive to requests.

I asked if the 1/3" chip size was a generic size used or was it based on any particular camera. It's generic but when I asked if they could base it on the HVX-200 they guy emailed me back saying they'd update the camera database and ad the HVX-200 on the next update. Cool.

Here's the link for the app:

Yep, it is a cool app for sure. The only bummer about it is that ti is limited to 23mm due to the optics of the camera. (But it works for my needs.)

I think getting an iPhone would be more expensive than a viewfinder.

But I get your point. Definitely an interesting idea, and these open platforms are really doing well.

Girls, Girls, Girls,

Calm down or I will be forced to pour you all saucers of cream.

The reason for the thread was to highlight there was an app that does the job (possibly better) that a MK-V Directors View Finder does.

and agreed, an iphone normally does have a monthly fee associated with it but I believe you can purchase them on the tinterweeb and not actually use it as your portable communication device (incurring no regular costs) but lets face it who would do that?

Well, there's one less iphone app that I need to worry about developing. I actually did a lot of thinking about this, but thought that it would be too problematic because of the FOV of the camera, but maybe I was wrong. I'll download the app just to check it out and support them. Now, if you could just add this into previz apps like Hitchcock and then allow cropped-recording you'd have a quick previz tool. Then again the hDSLR has changed previz a bit IMHO.

I'm also not giving up my trusty, old MKV since it's still a great framing tool and.... it reminds me of the old film days:)

Pretty cool app but I tried it with various combinations but couldn't get anything acceptably close for a 35mm adapter rig. I emailed them and they said they would look at adding adapter support in a future release. I'd also like to see the ability to add custom AoV settings like pCAM.

Their other app, 'Helios,' is a really handy tool as well...

viewfinder

viewfinder

just use a cheap cropped sensor DSLR with a cheap zoom lens with a big range and you will get very close to seeing what your camera will see and be able to take pictures with the same lens and angles that can even act as location storyboards. I know that's more money but it works really well for scouting. Also your eye is the best viewfinder and the more you think in mm's the better you will be able to eyeball just about any lens and FOV combination.
