Thinking back on the D90

This is a video I shot the first week I had a D90 (which I bought for stills). Shoot was going to be just the DVX but I started playing with the Nikon and ended up shooting most of the gig with it. (To you guys the which-is-which will be obvious). This show had two stages, one fairly well lit, the other off to the side with just a couple 60 watt wall lamps, probably maxed the ISO for it. All the D90 shots were handheld, the DVX was on a crane. Most of the D90 stuff was with an 80-200 2.8 (handheld!), with some 28mm and 100mm thrown in.

After a year of shooting Canon, I still recall this footage and find there's some sort of beautiful immediacy to it that I don't see in the Canon stuff I've shot. Come on Nikon - get it together!

(Hey, I performed all the music in this ad, that's what I'm actually "good" at...)

Its the same reason why I like nikon digital over canon. I too found myself in situations where I would have my FX1 setup as the A camera but I'd end up shooting more with the d90 and eventually using almost all the footage from it in the final edit. The d90 video, at least to me, reminded me of 8mm film, cause of its quality lvl and that It shoots 24fps, not 23.976. Used in that way, and expecting the quality level to be low, I was able to make the best of it while I had it.

example:

Happy that the d7000 puts out the same colors and range but at a much higher quality.
