Thinking about Getting an HVX

Hey guys, I'm brand new to the site here and I just wanted to ask a few questions and get your opinions. I've been shooting on an XL1 (not even the S) ever since it first came out, but sadly technology has passed me by and my own camera has formed 7 dead pixels. It's been two years since my last film but I'm now looking at making my first feature. I've very interested in buying an HVX for this, but I'd like to know what else I may need. I do fully intend to shoot 1080P so I know I'll need some P2 cards, but what else would be useful or needed? I'm shooting an action adventure movie in the mountains of colorado if that's any help.

I'm also planning on buying a new computer (Macbook Pro most likely) but I undertsand there's no slot on there for the P2 cards. Any solution for this yet? I'd love to have a dual booting mobile editing sytem.

Should I get a matte box for the camera and if so which one?

Also, I'm in the market for a new tripod. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for your help!

Ok as far as matteboxes go umm, chroziel is def. the nicest, but also the most expensive around 1500 go to the dvx user store and check that mattebox...thats the one im getting. Also people like the formatt but it bends really easily. As far as tripods go...it depends how much stuff youll be throwing on it...im using a bogen 516 head with 3182 heads...which will run you about 1000 but is well worth it hope that helps!

Gorilla,

Not to be rude, but all the info you need is going to be in the threads. Apple just released BootCamp, so you can run XP and OS X on the same machine (MacBook). You may also want to look and see if there are any USB adapters or the like that you can buy for P2.
Next time you post, please research before you do. This community spends a lot of time trying to create an environment where people can learn, and if people don't take the time to read what we have already posted, it just makes it harder for other people to sift through business that has already been answered to find other much-needed info.
No biggie, though. Welcome to the board!

I really don't see any real issue with these questions.

There is no solution for the lack of a cardbus slot on the MacBook Pro. There are not any USB adapters for this function inasmuch as they would need to be 32-bit.

As to matte boxes, I really haven't seen much posted on the issue.

Tripods are your call.

best wishes

I don't have a problem with the questions either, as he's asking for opinions.
(If he's trolling over well worn areas pertaining to noise or CCD pixel count...then okay.)

I'm also planning on buying a new computer (Macbook Pro most likely) but I undertsand there's no slot on there for the P2 cards. Any solution for this yet? I'd love to have a dual booting mobile editing sytem.

A PCMCIA to Express Card adapter is supposedly in the works and should be out soon if not already.

Should I get a matte box for the camera and if so which one?

Only if you'll have need for it. The Indysnap one plugged on this board seems to be a solid, economical choice.

Also, I'm in the market for a new tripod. Any suggestions there?

Not really, as it depends on your total budget. Bogen would likely have something solid and economical while Sachtler would be toward the high end but very well made. Between them is a range of quality products and likely the dealer from whom you purchase the cam will be a big help when you tell him how much you have and want to spend.

Boy, I know SIIG isn't doing this because the marketing person told me as much.

Do you have some support for this?

I'd love to know where because it would influence a buying decision

Let us know.

I'd check out the other threads to see if you want the Canon XL H1, HVX200, or the JVC HD100U.

In a nutshell, the H1 is the sharpest of the bunch but you have to use the camera to capture and it uses fake 24p.

The HVX has the nicest motion, color, and lighting and it records purely tapelessly.

The JVC is nice though doesn't really excel like the others do from what I've seen.

Gorilla. I too made the leap from the XL1 to the HVX. I had a bad pixel on the XL1 that drove me nuts... most people didn't see it, but I did. I understand the feeling of technology passing ya by... but the time is at hand to jump into something as revolutionary as this HD cam... or pretty much any for that matter.

If you are shooting on rugged terrain and or exteriors I wouldn't bring out such a sweet laptop. I love the P2store. Would work great for a feature and you could get buy with 1 or 2 P2cards.

Budget would kind of determin the tripod as well as portability and such. You might also want to pick up a shoulder support system for handheld stuff. I"m gonna buy something like that in the next couple of weeks.

good luck

Duel-technologies.com (I think that's the name) said they are developing a PCMCIA-to-ExpressCard adapter and that it should be out this summer.

David, here.
