C100: Thinking about a C100

Hi guys,

Thinking about swapping out my BMCC for a C100 but I'm still not sure. My personal projects are mostly verite style docs shot mostly in available light, but my living is made on corporate "talking head" type stuff.

My concerns about the C100 are: codec 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2, low data rate and lack of RAW option, but I love the low light ability of the Canon and its form factor, as well as the pro audio in.

My lens kit is a Tamron 17-50 2.8, Tamron 18-200 and Rokinon 35mm 1.4. My partner has a Ninja that he'll loan me, so I guess that's a consideration, too...

Thoughts?

If I were you I wouldn't think twice about it.. The c100 with a ninja blade($295 @ bandh, capture 10 bit prores/dnxhd). Not only will your work improve but so will your quality of life when shooting :)

I'm in the same boat minus switching from another cam (I have no cam currently). My only real worry is whether people will start demanding 4K before I've paid the damn thing off.

You'll be really happy with it. The Ninja isn't the best but it helps in extreme low light or if you're doing heavy vfx work. The internal codec is fine, though, for almost anything.

The above consideration of clients demanding 4k is an issue though. It's meaningless, a buzzword, really, but some clients seem to want it I guess?

...i needed a digital camera...low light beast...(along with my film camera) ...so I got c300 pl mount...

oem specs indicate 8 bit, yet there is plenty of testing out there that demonstrate the c100 is actually outputting 9.5 bits. In addition, recording to a 10bit codec has CLEAR advantages over 8 bit alternatives, the information is out there.

I was watching many test and never see any difference using ninja blade recorder . Even if there is some differences there are really cosmetics , for me not worth it . If you work in broadcast industry and need right codec , ok you can save plenty of money using c100 + ninja blade over c300 . BMCC is great I really wish to have camera with so great DR . I do not miss 4k in c100 just more DR and of course better codec . If you do heavy grading c100 might be not for you . You will not find so much place to play in post with c100 footage .

You can nitpick codecs and pixel peep all day, but the reality is that the C100 is just so much easier to work with and captures a really nice image.

Remember, NAB is right now so, wait at least until after next week. At worst, the new announcements will drive C100 prices down again.

yes...i am waiting to see whats announced and then have a specific colleague's used c100 package i might buy.

one thing about ninja vs c300 that another older colleague pointed out is if youre moving around, the ninja can be really fiddly (cables everywhere, tries to unscrew itself if on the shoe where many folks mount it). c300 you dont have that issue.

you need 4k...when you need 4k. some (usually higher end) clients demand certain specs for their shoots, some wouldnt know 4k from a head of lettuce. i work with both so never know.

^ Good points. NAB may bring some surprises from Canon -- I read something alluding to lower cost gear from them. At the very least hopefully it will drive down prices of the C series (as mentioned here)... Never had one request for 4K yet....

Of the hundreds of hours I logged when I owned that combo I never once lost a frame from a "fiddly" cable. Once its plugged in unless you go above and beyond its not coming out.

The connections may not be loose themselves but it's a lot of cabling for an errant human limb or other object to catch on and pull loose. The point is, it's one more potential faliure point. . .fewer things to go wrong is always better.

I know people in town are doing some 4K work. . .hell I just teleprompted on a 4K shoot with the FS7 for a major energy company. . .and I believe that was for an internal video!
