Things this website makes you regret.

So, I lurk alot. I also post alot. I make little posts. I'm sure alot of peopel think I'm annoying, but that's not what gets me. The thing I think I regret the most about being here is the way we talk about money, 500$ is devalued now to me.

I mean, what can I buy with 500$? A tripod? with a complimentry bag?

Yeah... if you want a crappy tripod.

EDIT: Okay, okay. I agree with you, but it can't be helped. This stuff is expensive. What really hit it home for me was that I recently bought a bunch of SCUBA gear, and it cost less than my DVX alone. Think about that, something that can sustain life hundreds of feet underwater is less expensive than the camera that most of us own. But that's the life, love it or get out. (Not directed at you.)

PS: I don't think anyone finds you annoying.

I unfortunately get reality checks everytime I tell my fiance I wanna buy something.

Tell her you don't have to worry, because you planned on hocking her ring for the 200 dollars, and just giving her one out of a crackerjack box.

GOOD THINGS COST MONEY!!

I am a recovering car enthusiast... I own a couple of vintage cars, have gotten into the racetrack experience a bit, etc. etc. Once you've gone down the dark path of auto addiction, everything else seems cheap.

My rationale for film/video purchases is that they are investments that could ultimately pay a nice return. In the meantime, digital filmmaking is the ultimate hobby, educational and creative. And compared to car stuff, everything's reasonably priced! A DVX costs about the same as a nice set of magnesium track wheels. An HVX is the price of two carbon fiber racing seats, plus a rollbar...

I guess I'm lucky. My wife is really great about me buying gear. Partly because she knows I don't get anything I don't really need. She also knows I make ALOT of my own stuff, so if there's something I can't make (like a mic, or headphones), she tells me to go for it.

She actually bought me my camera for an anniversary present. And before you get the wrong idea about our financila state. She supports a me, 2 kids and herself on 35K a year.

My 503 head and sticks cost me less than 500...but made my tripd legs out of popsicle sticks and bondo.

Yea, I remember when a friend of mine who was doing a body off restoration of a Morgan paid $10,000 just to have it painted.

That made me sit up and take notice (and vow to do as he said-"If you ever want a vintage car, find one that's already been restored, it's a lot cheaper. Noone ever gets their money back on what they put into it").

bro, you can buy some great stuff with $500. hmm, you can get a few 72mm filters, the pod (www.thepod.ca) which is indespensible, add to that a top of the line monopod, two rolls of G-tape, a used lowell pro-light, some gels, and a bunch of tapes, a buttload of C47s, a mafer clamp and a cardellini. shazaam, new fun stuff.

Especially the POD. I lvoe the POD, best 20 bux a doc shooter can spend, really folks.

clothes pins are c47s, I think you are thinking of 47c's my friend (when you flip the clothespins around so the skinny end clamps)

The POD looks really useful. I am leaving tomorrow for Guatemala and could use something like this. I may have one shipped to me down there!

Can anyone tell me what exactly it DOES? I can't figure out for the life of me what this POD is. I know it's going to be completley obvious, but I have to ask.

It looks like a beanbag with a tripod mount. So you can use it to get a steady shot in places where using a tripod would be unwieldy or impossible.

Yup,

that's exactly what it is, and it is SO rediculously useful. Makes pretty much anything into a tripod. Brought it with me on shoots in almost 30 countries and makes running and gunning so much better. Plus, it gives you something nice on the bottom of the camera to hold on to, and it means never haveing to put your camera directly on top of things.
