GH4 TheCameraStoreTV review of the Samsung NX1 shot with the GH4 in 4K !

AAAH!! I am torn apart!!! What to buy... the NX1 or the GH4! As a happy Gh2 owner with 2 native lumix lenses, I've been anticipating the release of the Gh4, carefully hoarding the Shekels for the momentous day when I pull the trigger on the purchase. Then the Nx1 drops in.... cheaper and with better image quality! I want! WhaddaIdo? Help me.... someone!

The only drawbacks to the Nx1 that concerns me is:

Workflow transcoding hassle
No SpeedBooster is possible (due to the flange distance)
Did the guy (Jordan) say there aren't any plain generic adapters for vintage lenses available? So no adapting FD, Minolta MD, Nikon etc?? AAAAH! That could be a deal breaker as I have a large number of manual lenses.

But the image quality.... wowwoooo.... up to 1600 iso..... has me so stoked....

I am not into brand loyalty.... I dumped Canon for PANA in a heartbeat...

Yea or Nay for the NX1??

I feel your pain. NX1 is still new- looks solid from what I'm seeing so far, but hoping to get my hands on one in the near future for extensive testing. Its really hard to say without using both.

Maybe the Samsung NX1 will 'mature' in 6 months or so with lens options, adaptors, native editing in Premiere/FCP etc, but right now, its an early adopter option only as far as i'm concerned. GH4 all the way.

If the sales of the NX1 don't completely suck hopefully Samsung will keep at it long enough to really develop something special with their camera line. While the NX1 is an amazing value on some levels, the lack of lens options and workflow challenges isn't going to get me to part ways with my shekels.

As I have said elsewhere, I would love to see a more video centric version/model like what Sony did with the A7S

If they made the sensor 20MP the increased size of the photosites would make it that much better in low light. It would also ease make it easier to get higher frame rates, maybe up 240 fps. At 20MP the camera would still be an excellent stills camera. Metabones could still make an active EF adapter, it wouldn't be a Speedbooster but at least it would allow EF lenses to be easily used and managed on their cameras. It would be great if Samsung could also stand to create some flat log picture profiles. I am not sure it would be possible for Samsung to change the flange distance on their mirrorless cameras as I don't know if it would affect their current native lens range.

In one or two years, I could see Samsung overtaking a large percentage of the mirrorless market. Their sensor and processor technology seems to be light years ahead of the competition. They need to tweak a few things but it should be very interesting to see what they come up with next.

Agreed. I'm also surprisingly liking the colors out of it, more than Panasonic and Sony SOOC. I know that's largely personal opinion, but I'm not the first or last to think so either.

No SpeedBooster is possible (due to the flange distance)

Do you need a SpeedBooster? Because in the review I heard the guy say the 4k is actually downsized from the full 6k APS-C sensor, not extracted like the GH4. So you should get close to a Super35 crop from your lenses natively.

Yes, you do get a s35mm crop, which is great and industry standard as we all know. But that doesn't stop people from wanting the FF look. Look at how many people caught the FF bug boosting APS-C cameras like the FS100. Especially when working with EOS or Nikon photography glass, you KNOW 30% of your possible image is being cropped off. Its nice to know we have the option, but sadly the option is not afforded here. I wonder if that means the flange distance is also too restrictive to allow things like FD mount glass. The biggest complaint I've heard so far with this camera is that the mount system is still in its infancy. Adapters are few and far between and may or may not come in the future.

The flange on NX is 25mm instead of ~20mm of most mirrorless systems, so the one system I know that has difficulty adapting lenses from is the Leica M mount. I expect most rangefinder glass to be problematic as well.

The other thing I didn't like is that there's a tab in the NX mount that detects if a lens has been mounted. Make sure a third-party lens adapter depresses it, else you're not taking any photos or videos.

Samsung have some pretty nice native glass out there. The 16-50/2-2.8 looks interesting, as is the upcoming 50-150. I have tried the 85/1.4 and it's stupendous. All-in-all I'd rate the Samsung lens lineup over the Sony one, and that's including the overhyped Zeiss-branded glass.

I did look around the net for NX to vintage lenses (FD, MD, Nilon etc) and there seem to be a whole bunch.... pretty cheap to0 .... from $10 (from China) and $23 (from B and H). I know nothing about NX's.... not even sure if the adapters will actually work with the NX1. I'm quite happy using just my collection of FD's, MD's, Nikons, Fuji's, Konica's...... wait.... I got too much.... will have to have a garage sale pretty soon....

Agreed. I don't know why he said that in the video, seems there are plenty of adapters out there already. This is not their first camera to use that mount.

I handled a NX1 today. Bloody hell it's nice. Except for the inability to select AF points directly on the D-pad the camera gets a lot of things right. The amount of tech is insane too; I think it's the only camera with 802.11ac and the first time I've seen an option to choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi frequencies!

Just read a test report on the NX1.... and it ain't too good.

Other than a beautiful video image (better than the GH4) everything else is downhill.

Will sit on my hands on this one, and lean heavily back to the Gh4.

Off the above 5D review.

The Samsung NX1 offers an impressively beautiful UHD image. If this kind of image is all you’re after and you’re willing to live with the limitations, then this camera could do something for you. It’s just very hard to get there.

They're missing a number of the short cuts, however (such as using different conversion software, etc)

Yeah, honestly, that review didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, yet seemed to make it sound more negative with their spin.

AHEM Below is a comment on that from Andrew Reid:

[h=5]Andrew Reid December 3, 2014[/h]What\’s not usable about it compared to the 7D Mark II? You marked it down for the EVF. You can\’t even use the viewfinder at all for video on the 7D. The EVF is on the NX1 is perfectly fine anyway, I don\’t get the criticism. Samsung make the best OLED panels on earth. It isn\’t as strong optically as the X-T1\’s EVF but the A7S isn\’t either. The screen on the NX1 is articulated. 7D Mark II isn\’t. Big difference for tripod usage there. Then the review contains mistakes… such as, wrong software to transcode. If you had read EOSHD, you clearly didn\’t, I already said the supplied Samsung app is to video what Silkypix is to stills… better to use a third party app. Wondershare is fast to transcode from H.265 and it does so to ProRes. In ProRes you have a flatter image that grades better, simply by applying a LOG curve to the footage in the transcoding app. You also have the camera set up incorrectly. -10 contrast and SmartRange? You must be kidding me. That destroys image quality. You\’re supposed to turn the picture profile off entirely for a feed that most closely resembles the raw sensor data in Rec.709. Dynamic range is perfectly fine and with no trade offs. It is similar to the 1D C but for $1599 not $12,000 as is rolling shutter. Your dynamic range and RS lab tests are flawed. The A7S in 1080p APS-C crop mode definitely does not have the same rolling shutter as the GH4 in 4K. It\’s better. Likewise the NX1 does not have more RS than the 1D C. You\’re using the wrong focal lengths. You can\’t test different sized sensors like this. In terms of focus aids disappearing in movie mode… only whilst recording or in movie standby mode. This is a much more minor disadvantage than you\’ve made out. Does the 7D Mark II also allow you to magnify focus when recording? No! Does it even have peaking? No! Did you make a big deal of it? No! The way to shoot with the NX1 is to put stills in 16:9 and there you have the correct framing for video (Ultra HD) and as near to DCI 4K 1.85:1 as makes no difference. Peaking works better on the NX1 than on any other camera on the market under $5000 and the magnify assist can be moved around the frame unlike on many $10k + cinema cameras. Then you hit record. What\’s so difficult about that? Have fun with your 1080p mush on the 7D with no video focus aids, no EVF, no articulating screen, no PL mount adapters and no soul at all."
