The Wrestler

Of course there is!

Put family first.

Have a B and C plan especially when you are on top of the world!

Live until you are done!

.....

Of course there is!
But Wrestler is not about happyness inside the family. Wrestler is about fullfillment when you do what you like. Search for the relationship was a mistake for Ram, not the goal. Do you remember how he was full of life and enthusiastic when he cut himself in the shop and painted his face with the blood?
The end of Wrestler reminded me words from the movie "Max Mayne" -- to die in bed is a shame for a warrior... Warrior must die in the battle.

The estranged daughter plot was more metaphor for Randy than actually being about family. The major theme running through the film, literally and metaphorically, is that Randy does not take care of his heart.

The only things that brings fulfillment are not an option anymore because they could possbily be fatal or leave him disfigured, so he is forced to adjust and look for happiness or survival elsewhere. This is where the film is interesting since Randy has zero idea how to proceed.

He is forced to confront some of the consequences of his actions (and old-age, death, etc) and try to adjust. He just cannot adjust, though. It's even more painful than the pain he forces upon himself in the ring, plus people actually cheer for him when he plays out rising above the pain as a wrestler.

I think it's interesting that the wrestling is staged, yet there is still a great deal of pain and real violence. Randy cannot stage the events in his real life. It is too much for him.

Perhaps ultimately film is little more than an ever so beautiful and sophisticated Rorschach inkblot test?

I do know that those are the choices he made and the paths he took but I think if he could he would have had it all.

None the less it stands as cautionary tale to the cost of not managing your affairs and just living "The High Life!" Both in metaphor and literally.

I loved the film on so many levels including the grainy aesthetics of the camera work, the 16mm shots, the staging, the locations, the acting, and the stars delivery of "The Goods"...

Yes, if he could, he would... But Ram didn't tried hard enought.

The Christian world puts "true" values into love, family. Asian world is more focused into other things.

Please, Please, Please go into more detail because this is very much news to me!

I am not familiar with asian culture, but a friend (studied in Japan) told me about it. In asian (China, Japan, etc.) purpose of life is to find the apprentice and to give him all your knowledge (tradicion). No matter is it your own child or some orphan - you give away your knowledge and then you are fullfiled. This was told to me, because I didn't understood the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Master Li Mu Bai and old bad woman fighting for the young girl (Jen Yu), they both want to teach her.

Quote:

Jen Yu: Why do you want to teach me?
Li Mu Bai: I've always wanted a disciple worthy of the Wudang secrets.

In begining of the movie Master Li Mu Bai says, that in meditation he reached some high level, so he has nothing to learn anymore. But his life is not complete ultill he teaches someone what he knows.

Same aspect was in the comedy Kung Fu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373074/). Hero (Sing) defeats the very bad and very evil charater with a very powefull force, and then you see this:

The Beast: What is the name of your technique?
Sing: You wanna learn? I will teach you!

The evil one (The Beast) drops on his knees and calls the hero (Sing) "My Master!". And then The End of movie. Movie ends like this because to give away your knowledge to someone is one of goals of life in east asia culture. Bur, as I said, this was told to me by a friend.

fu#$ that! a true warrior goes for the spiritual path and teaches others the finer war tactics of ending without bloodshed. a true warrior gets laid at the end!:Drogar-Love(DBG):

oh i loved the movie....it hit close to home..................but i'm still here Ray! i didn't go down Ray!

Was I supposed to cry during that movie? Lucky Alex didn't notice with my ninja tear wiping skillz.

I've heard that several times in posts. I didn't feel any of that at all.
Although I do notice myself grunting and groaning as I move around to do the simplest of tasks now.

(Speaking of the character)
But emotionally, no, I didn't get any of that. I like how he went out his own way though as a choice. But I didn't well up at any point although they had the character cryin and all that. I got it. Appreciate it. Cool. Good movie.

Just some quick impressions (saw it last night)

Very good Mickey Rourke performance, but somehow I can't help but feel a very big similarity of the Wrestler's character with Rocky, or Stallone's own take on the muscles with no brain but good heart character. Actually, the similarities between Rocky doesn't end up with the character. The story is very, very close.

The Wrestler could really be Rocky VI- the realistic, unromantic version.

All in all, a beyond average movie. But not best film material. As for best performance by a leading man... Maybe. Still think Rourke is not as good as Stallone on this role. But its certainly a more demanding role than Benjamin Button. Will see Milk this weekend with Frost/Nixon to see which one is up there for best performance.

Doubt is my favourite for the acting Oscars, by the way. Seymour Hoffman was fantastic, as well as Meryl Streep. That was incredible acting!
