The Wrestler

I went to see this last night, and all I can say is "WOW." This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.

Mickey Rourke is outstanding, and you get the feeling that nobody could have possibly played this part but him. In fact, Bill Simmons wrote a great article about this. Aronofsky did a fantastic job as the director - everything felt raw and real, and never over the top. His usually heavy-handed visuals are absent, and the only time you really, really feel the director's touch is in the final moment, which is emotionally devastating.

I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

I'm hoping to see this sometime early next week at the arclight... I could just wait a few weeks for wide release, but I need an excuse to go to the arclight at least once a year, and I feel as if this is a damn good one.

And to top it all off... Bruce Springsteen's song "The Wrestler" is great. Just perfect and great. You have to wait until the end credits to hear it though.

I saw it at TIFF this year. The whole audience seemed to really enjoy the movie. I loved observing everybody from the balcony during a specific grocery store scene.

i had not heard of this before, but I just saw the trailer, now I want to see it, I've always liked Rourke, and i'm in love with Marisa Tomei, well her jennifer love hewwitt, and lucy lui.

I hate Springsteen... but I will say that the song for this film is fantastic and I've heard it several times now between the trailer and the film's website, where the whole song plays in the background.

Unfortunately I gotta wait for this to come out in Wide Release, no theater has it in my area. Can't wait to see it though.

I'm with the MCG on this one. Looking forward to it. I've seen the trailer twice now in the theater (including before JCVD last night). Can't help but think that this role was written with Rourke in mind.

Just caught it.

I thought it was amazing. It was a nice change of pace for Aronofsky (I didn't much care for The Fountain) I thought this film worked on several levels. It was nice to see the gritty realness of that world. One I so vividly remember, growing up as a rugged little rascal from the deep south (actually going to those small wrestling shows in little arenas)

Anywho...

strengths = production design, cinematography, a tender / raw Rourke

weaknesses = maybe it BORDERS on overly sentimental at times... but only for the most shrewd and cynical... I thought it was a great story/character arc

4.5 outta 5 and one of the best I've seen all year.

I'm so bummed I can't see this thing. It's not playing anywhere near me. I'm more interested in this than any of the Christmas Day fluff :/
