The Wrestler

Just watched it. Another high recommendation.
Mickey Rourke really showed his matured talent in this one. Apparently, he has not been sitting on his ass all these years.

Marisa Tomei also delivered the money.

Very refreshing movie coming from hollywood. Reminds me of the Barton Fink scene where the office dude is discussing being relegated to handling a wresting movie, and he was insulted by the suggestion. I guess he didn't know M.Rourke would be starring in it, haha.

Babble mode =[on]

Anyways, I got the feeling the writing was from a non hollywood source. More international, maybe even French Canadian, but I'm biased that way I suppose.
It felt like the local stuff I grew up on (writing wise) and I can't see Hollywood doing anything like this with any kind of a budget. I guess it's a vibe I'm getting.
I briefly googled Robert Siegel and apart from his imdb and a youthful avatar, I can't find his background.
Babble mode= [off]

At any rate, a really refreshing movie.

I know, but I was wondering what his background as a writer is, as in where did he grow up and what were his influences? Just bugging me. This film just really strikes me as a foreign (from the standard USA source I mean) peice of writing.

I can name a couple of our popular Canadian movies that had the same writing style and tone, although most of the french film I grew up watching during the 60's had that tone. The obvious difference between our local films and this I find is the directing and to a lesser extent the casting, but that's not the point as far as writing goes.

I've seen many films from other countries but I think the vibe I'm getting is closer to home.
I don't know, what can I say. The forum says 'film disussion'.

Whale Music [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_Music_(film)) ]is one local I really enjoyed. Had the same kind of flow. Another one of the most popular Canadain classics is 'Going down the road'
http://www.canadianactor.com/actors/pov/gdtr.html but it's pretty old now. You might recognize one of the lead actors from that in later films like Porkys and Apocolypse Now. But I digress.

Anyways, just real curious about the writers background/history.

The Wrestler seemed to take a strong influence from Belgian filmmakers (a personal favorite) the Dardenne Bros.

Can you give a recomendation for a Dardenne film? I'm not familiar with them.
Sounds interesting.

Just got back from the theater…

A+ for Mickey Rourke
A for Marisa Tomei

But the movie didn't fully meet my expectations (which may have been far too high). I though it was well-crafted and engaging, but felt the emotional impact was a bit weak. It's still in my top 10 for 2008, but it's in the bottom five not the top five like I was thinking it would be.

Just my .02.

That's what I'm talk'n bout!

Her body performed oh so well!

She's in remarkable shape!

She obviously trained very very hard to get ready for that role.

And yes she did a very good job acting.

The girl who played his daughter was simply and completely superb!

O' after reading these all comments I am much impressed. I'll try my best to see this movie after office time (sure). Would you tell me more about it before I see?

You mean you need to know more than that Marisa Tomei gets all kinds of naked to get your butt in the theater?

Just saw it with the wife. Best movie I have seen in many years.

And I think I may have convinced to put a brass pole in the living room!

Random thoughts on an excellent movie, the best I've seen in a long time.

(SPOILERS)

The scenes in the grocery store were so well done. The part where he quits was so visually uncomfortable & awkward, I felt like I was right there in the store.

On all counts I think the crew/actors/director NAILED IT with their portrayal of the low tier wrestling circuit. Having filmed matches in VFW halls, I can tell you that is EXACTLY how it looks, right down to the guys folding the chairs and taking apart the ring at the end of the event. (I can't vouch for the staples/barbed wire match, though. I've seen some crazy stuff at old ECW events, but that match was INSANE!!!)

One minor complaint would be Evan Rachel Wood's performance/dialogue. Very predictable. It was like I could visualize her lines before she said them.

They were giving away free Wrestler posters at the theatre. Not bad!
