The Wrestler

Tomei is all kinds of naked in Before the Devil Knows your Dead and is seen getting snogged like there is no tomorrow. Unfortunately, this is canceled out by the fact that you have to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman's saggy behind at the same time, as it is he who is doing the snogging.

Just got back from seeing this at the arclight.

Still don't quite know what to think. Overall it was very good. Acting, cinematography, sound work, all very very nice.

Never been a big Aronofsky fan, but this work seemed much more restrained and 'mature'.

I'll have to think on it more or see it again before I can form a real opinion, but definitely impressed. The ending was terrific as well.

just got back from seeing. this and Milk and Wendy & Lucy are my favs of the year (excluding some foreign films i loved). and honestly, between the two, I'd be more likely to re-watch The Wrestler than Milk. but both are great filmmaking with great performances.

I have to wonder, knowing the sort of films Aronofsky is known for, if he recently came across the works of the Dardenne bros. I saw quite a few moments and even a scene or two from Rosetta, The Son and others.

I loved the ending of this film... and the contrast between the life of an aging stripper and an aging wrestler is quite interesting.

Rourke, looks like all kinds of hell in this film.

What a film.... still felt like Aronofsky's other work, in it's asthetic camera work and gritty look.

I really loved the film. Rourkes acting was amazing, as was Aronofskys direction. I was quite affected by the story. I don't usually feel emotional watching sappy stuff like a father talking to a long lost daughter...but this actually got me.

And....Marisa Tomei is milf-tastic.

Fantastic film. Requiem was more to my taste. But this was powerful. Spot on acting by everyone. Tomei looked amazing and she acted so much like a real stripper it gave me flashbacks.:Drogar-Love(DBG): Direction was good as to be expected. Very gritty and totally worth checking out. I would have never thought in a million years a Mickey Rourke film would bring a tear to my eye.

This was a spare and beautiful film. Emotional but not sentimental, and damn near perfectly executed. Rourke will get the oscar, no doubt about it. The only thing the Academy loves more than actors playing retards is the old timer making a comeback, and while Rourke isn't that old, he looks like he's lived every one of his 52 years twice. Great film.

I agree. Just saw this last night. We were riveted the entire time. In addition to Rourke's performance, this really solidifies Aronofsky as a master craftsman, I think. No tricks, no gimmicks, just as simple as can be, and when you can be that powerful being that simple, you're it.

My only minor beef is that I thought the daughter could have been written a hair better. Seems like her conversion to him was a little too sudden, and her dialog was too expository, I think.

Tomei was great. But when those guys were in the club, dissing her, I was like, um, yeah, toss that one my way. No complaints AT ALL!!! :)

Also, I knew people wanted to see this, but man, we were at the Sunshine and the shows were selling out one after another right before my very eyes. By the time I called my GF back to ask: "how about the next one?" the next one was sold out! We passed up 2 sold out screenings to catch it and our theater was packed too.

As for the equipment, I think it was Super 16mm. I forget, but I believe they discuss it in this interview here between Aranofsky and Danny Boyle. I know Slumdog was the Genesis SI-2K camera.

I really enjoyed the Wrestler. I felt Marisa Tomei's character was tacked on a bit, but Mickey Rourke's character and performance were mesmerizing.

it was shot on an Arri 416.

A Great Movie!

A Must See!

Goes a long long way in showing that the STORY is indeed damn near EVERYTHING!

The 16mm was ridiculously grainy in scenes and there was huge huge inconstancies in quality but the film still turned out to be a great movie!

Well acted.

Well staged/choreographed/Stunted

Damn good movie with a great cautionary tale.
