The Weapon - A short film inspired by Freddie Wong

Hey all, been watching a lot of Freddie Wong's films on Youtube & figured we'd do something similar, with our own twist of course. I know it's not perfect but it's taken a while in post.

you broke 180 degree rule, read about it, you should drop vignetting completely cause it looks bad,its nice that youre making cgi yourself but,its not yet there but some shots would look ok if cut in some places, for example last shot should start from frame which is at 1:29 cause looks better from distance in this shot.
When guy falls he is clean on his back but second before in the same shot he had blood splashes all over the place.

That chopper actually looks really good in most of the shots! That first blood splatter, as well. Great job with that compositing.

The rest of it is questionable to me. The "look" is so extreme and has gone beyond being cliche at this point. I agree that the vignetting is overdone and adds nothing.

Beyond that, the main thing I get from FreddieW's films and little gags is a joy of filmmaking and a carefree sense of humor. I don't get that same feeling here. This felt like a serious drama, but lacking any kind of story. I don't have a problem with that – I think it's good to do exercises from time to time and just make something. I wouldn't call it a "film," though.

Anyway, cool stuff, look forward to seeing what you do next.

Thanks man, i take all the abrupt negative stuff with a pinch of salt. Even Hollywood gets slated. Too many critics.

Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Well, the general theme was that what goes around comes around and that there's always someone with something bigger. In this case a weapon.

A theme, however, is not a story.

I'm not trying to be negative. I think you made a cool test piece here. And I think that's what Freddiew does… he's constantly putting out new stuff, trying out new techniques. The reason his short pieces work as standalones is because they're internally fun, briskly paced, and highly referential. His Portal film or his Rocket Jump film would be meaningless and fall flat if everyone watching didn't already know what those things are about.

I tend to agree, everything looked really cool (except for the wider shots of the guy getting shot by the helicopter, and while the blood on the lens is cool, doing it multiple times is a bit much) but I wouldnt really call it a film. I guess it was technically a story in that there were a sequence of events, but it irks me a little when people do effects tests or copy the crap phillip bloom is putting out and calling it a film (don't get me wrong, the stuff bloom shoots is gorgeous, but I'll argue to the death that he is not a film maker and wouldnt be able to tell a good story if his life depended on it).
