The Walking Dead - Frank Darabont's Zombie Show on AMC!

They've been shooting this locally (in Atlanta) and quite a few of my friends have been working on it (FX dept, acting, etc.) I think it looks pretty good. I wasn't big on zombies in my younger days but they've grown on me. It looks entertaining and the idea of it taking place in the city where I reside intrigues me. I'll give it a chance.

Some of my friends too (I suspect some of the same ones) so definitely hope this works well so they can continue to shoot it in ATL.

David Bianculli who reviews TV shows on NPR was a fan of Mad Men, Dexter and a couple of other shows that I like as well. So I tend to lean towards any shows he says "take a look at this". I caught the tail end of a review, I think it was the closing of Mad Men and he mentioned The Walking dead and how he "Loved It". Thats enough for me to 'take a look'.

Iv'e suspended too much reality and disbelief when it comes to vampire, werewolve, or zombie movies. They worked for me as a kid but not as an adult. Just take a step back and think about these genres for a second and how one has to totally throw out intelectually sensibilities.

Hollywood needs to try harder.

Finished reading the first 48 issues of the graphic novel the day before last. So good. Rick (and the rest of the characters) are all really well put together.

I would like to say that 28 Days Later most likely took the waking up in Hospital bit from The Day of the Triffids.

I have seen the Walking Dead pilot and was intrigued and entertained. I too have become tired of Zombies but I really enjoyed how this one spends time with the characters inbetween the grue. Some haunting shots and a nice bit of atmos scoring from Bear McCreary too. The only negative I had about it was the inevitable use of CGI blood.

I just read all the comics, what a phenomenal zombie post apoc story this series is. it almost re-defines the genre in it's epic-ness.
now i just saw the AMC pilot today, Darabont is the man. Season 1 will be 6 hours of top caliber zombie tales. That's like a trilogy of movies right there. i'm impressed and excited.

This was pretty damn great, I have to say. Yes, we've seen a lot of this before, but they are really taking their time, letting the mood and tension build instead of resorting to cheap shock scares. And the cast is great. I was a fan of Lennie James on Jericho and he's really good here as well. That last scene had me crapping my pants. I'll be watching more.

Nice.

Still, it felt so completely out of place. But other than that one nit-pick, I thought the first episode was great.

Pretty good. I don't love how quickly he adapted and how little questions he asked. I would have been asking for a lot of background info on what the hell happened.
Still, it's nice to see that they are focusing on the characters.

I also thought it was really stupid when they let the kid wander off alone at the police station. Why risk it?

I like it though. It has potential.

Kind of like the Dead Can Dance track at the end of 'The Mist'.

On a technical note, I watched it on AMC HD and it looks to me like it was shot on Super16. I mean, the thing looked ok (slightly soft and grainy) in HD, but I wonder why they opted for for it. Seems like there was budget for 35mm or high-end digital.

One of the things I liked about the approach here is that they always reminded you these Zombies used to be people. There was something more humane about it, and sad. They weren't just cannon fodder.

Agreed. Smart choice. Interesting that they gave a hint that there might be something left in them. Like they might not be completely mindless.

At least that's how I took the Mom returning to the house. Didn't sound like it was the first time either.

I keep thinking about why the lead was left in the hospital, and have the sneaking suspicion his partner told everyone he was dead so he could get his mitts on his wife. If so, things could be pretty interesting if they reunite.
