SHORT: The Wait

The "intro" is nice, with the shadow-effects.

The ambience sounds, well the idea is nice...But it misses some things to make it more "sound like you hear it from inside a building". Also the "sirenes are arriving effect", also callled: doppler is not just by "increasing the volume, but by many other factors. It's not easy and to have it right, the best is to record a sirene arriving, passing and going away or to have one recorded like that from somewhere. Also watch out for repeating sounds.

Some of the dialogues were less good (to roomy), so not boomed properly .... Like the shot around 1:44, sounds to far for this kind of shot. But I think the first seconds of that shot was a large one, so the mic had to be high... But then the mic didn't go lower.... I think...

The "fading" effect is nice, accept for 2:37 it feels like a mistake. Same for around 4:15

The end is surprising, but nice.

I thought it was pretty decent. There were some really cool shots, but way too many dolly shots. It became distracting and after awhile the dolly shots lost their coolness, because they were done on virtually every shot in the beginning. Other than that I thought it was pretty creative. The DVX didn't look too bad, but I don't understand why he shoot in SD when you can get a much, much better HD quality picture for half the price or less.

When we shot this there weren't that many affordable HD cams out there. My HG10 gets a better picture in certain circumstances. But at the time this is what we had and we made the best of it. This is a DVX100A that was matched up to my DVX100.

Oh, I gotcha.' Well, that makes total sense then. I just know there are some people out there actually still using the DVX100a for films and I just can't understand why. Especially since they're still more expensive than some of the dslrs. Anyway, what does the director plan to do with the film?

He's finally doing a festival run with it. We got a doc called "Mound Bayou" that we shot this year into a local festival now we're trying to get this one into some too. I'm looking at DSLRs myself, but the issue is most DPs have their own and unless I'm actually behind the lens I don't do much shooting now days save for church stuff. On the flipside if I had my own dslr (Canons seem to be the big one), it would save me time searching for DPs when I could simply shoot it myself.

If I got a Pansonic AF100 or a PAL SONY VG10 that would be hot. I know the VG10 has only a mic jack, but no XLR ports, but I have BeachTek that seems to solve every such problem. Even on the Canon we managed to get great sound from the shotgun mic through the BeachTek. All the sound issues were just talk. Once we figure out how to do it properly we never had any issue again including hum. At the price the VG10 is looking mighty fine. I'm just waiting for firmware hackers to do something to add 24p because I doubt Sony every will.

You definitely can't go wrong with having your own camera. It makes things soooooo much easier. You can film when you have time and then you learn all the things about the camera that you need to know in order to get the best look possible.

Congrats on the short's progress too!

Thanks. I'm and definitely looking into a new camera. I'm actually considering 3D, but they say the 3D TV market isn't going anywhere, so I don't know if I should get involved or not. Personally I'm not interested, but I'm wondering what sells would be like for 3d DTV movies.
