The Vimeo Plus SECRET BUTTON for full 1080p streaming

This has been asked of me over and over. I can't take full credit for it as I forget who originally pointed it out to me, but it is a pretty buried feature so I figured I would post it in it's own thread since a lot of you use vimeo and have a vimeo plus account and are unaware of how much BETTER your 1080p video will look when you click the secret button (assuming you had a very good clean encode to start with.. but that's a whole other thread of it's own).

So here it is, the "vimeo secret button thread" complete with high end REAL 2D pictures and scrawlovision so I don't have to keep repeating this:

If you are vimeo + ($60 for the year) you get 3 benefits
#1 your ORIGINAL files stay up so people can download the highest end version if you REALLY want people to see your work in pristine quality
#2 you get a lot more bandwidth. I think you can upload 5 gigs per week.

#3 you get... (dramatic music hit) THE SECRET BUTTON!

What is the secret button? The secret button is a button that should be right out there in front of you when you are uploading, but for whatever reason it's not. It's buried three layers deep.

You have to fully upload your 1920 x 1080p FULL HD clip, then AS it's encoding or after it's done encoding (to 720p automatically.. blech) you click on the GEAR looking SETTINGS button on the top right,

So you have three steps....

STEP 1: Click on the GEAR looking 'Settings' button

STEP 2: Now click on the Video File Plus bar under Basic Info panel

STEP 3: Click on the secret button!

Now your video will re-encode at the best possible streaming quality and FULL 1080p 2mill pixel resolution!

This option is only available to vimeo plus members. I was on the fence about vimeo for a while but I have to say it is currently the best streaming quality available and currently outdoes youtube's full HD stream by quite a bit - plus it keeps your original encode downloadable if you wish. Worth $60 a year if you're a pro or a quality nut and want to make sure viewers see it as you made it.

Enjoy...

Didn't I tell you about this? Little credit man! :P

I really wish vimeo had the option for the viewer to pick 720, 1080, and SD....I would like them to play my videos in 1080p, I shoot and upload them in 1080, but it just makes them go really really slow on many computers and devices.

Yes, it was you Ben... ! Thanks! Props to Ben_B ya'll.

I didn't remember cause your icon camera goggles scared me so much that I had to get my own goggles.

And I agree, there should be a resolution menu like youtube has or some sort of auto-sensing of speed and resolution of the computer requesting the file.

Thanks Ben and Blackout. Can we do this months after they were uploaded or do we have to do it right away?

I think it's a fairly new feature but you can also re-upload a video if you have a better encode without it effecting your stats.. but no one really cares about 'views' on vimeo. It's not a contest like on youtube.

You can hit it whenever you want.

Cool thanks. I just converted most of my files. It appears that when you convert them to 1080p they no longer show "unavailable" in the "stage" options when you right click on the video and view the properties.

Geez this has been around for awhile. It's the result of the paying Vimeo members repeatedly asking Vimeo to provide it. Which they did, after saying it would not look any better.
Problem is that while it is great for ppl with real bandwidth, many people will experience playback issues. You can also upload the video twice and having two versions.

Are you a youtube partner?

Are you a youtube partner?

I'm a partial partner not a full one. I had full on battles with google and youtube (one and the same) so they would not give my channel full partnership but I have partnership on many videos. I simply submit it to them for review and have to wait 3 months for approval which is annoying as &^#&^ when there are 13 year olds with full partnership pulling in money in the hundreds of thousands who break every rule in the book. After you get partnership they don't check on you that much but if you are a trouble maker like me from the start they get all 1984 big brother on your a$$. I make about a whopping $500 a month from youtube / adsense.. not my main bread and butter. At least not YET.

Yea I submitted to be a partner but I had uploaded a video a few years ago that someone claimed a copy right on. I deleted the video right away but they wouldn’t allow me to be a partner. Where do you submit your individual videos to? I didn’t realize you could request individual videos to have ads.

Thanks for all of your help. I think your videos are hilarious. That last one at the film festival was awesome. It reminded me of dumb and dumber. Keep posting.

This is kinda like how people refuse to read instruction manuals then get surprised when there's a setting on a device they didn't know about...

Read.

Do you know what every setting on your camera does? I didn't know what everything on the GH2 did until this weekend. The manual is difficult to understand even when you read it 10 times.

Actually, vimeo's compression is a bit higher, at 1.5mbps flv (flash) bitrate for HD, versus youtubes full 2mbps+ (varies). This is with 720p on both sites though, have not tested their 1080!

I was a full on youtube quality fan but I hsve the same file encoded on both youtube and vimeo and the vimeo 1080p hd looks better less artifacts Not that the youtube one looks bad it all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO_h_Irqn_4&hd=1 (be sure to up to 1080p)

vs

You tell me.....

Yea Vimeo is definitely better. However, it isn't light years better. I am satisfied with both of them now. I just can't stand how restrictive youtube is on what you can post. If any music is playing in the background instantly someone else owns the rights to your video.

Not absolutely true. I had a lot of issues with them because I was doing SNL type sketch parody stuff and would use tiny clips sometimes under parody and satire fair use I should be allowed to use it. I had a video with a few hundred thousand views (Smallville parody) that was a complete original production shot on the DVX100 and it had a TINY few second clip of the opening theme music a few years ago and suddenly they MUTED the ENTIRE audio when I had thousands of positive comments.

I went ape s**t and filed a counter claim (which they don't spell out easily how to do) and they restored it. It's what I am doing now with the Prince videos. You'll see them back up in a few weeks he can not pull them down as I am reviewing the concert, they were short under 1:30, and it was fair use and I spoke to a lawyer and he says it holds. I just filled out the form we'll see. I don't let these big companies run me over. The bank also tried to do that to me, I am probably the only person you'll ever know who has 3 identities on one check and debt card. They said NO WAY.. I said yes way and looked up the law and did it on the computer and sure enough... the checks and check cards came in the mail which read Michael Bigansky AKA Michael Biggins AKA Blackout - so I can get checks written out to "Blackout" or the other two. I don't ever use the first anymore. Look into something call "the strawman" or your legal fiction strawman in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS for an eye opener. The you on your birth certificates, drivers license, credit cards and all court documents is not you, it is a legal fiction, a corporation employee of the corporation of the UNITED STATES - whch is really run by districts that are not even part of the country. You - the real you, is what is legally referred to as a natural person' a sovereign being under God. God being a thing only as defined by you, and that version of you spells its name as John Doe not JOHN DOE in all caps. A little thing...you think.... but a HUGE thing, that most people don't know or understand.

But don't get me started.... this is the GH camera forum not the secret society forum. I'm a level 42 Freemason I must be shush shush or they will disembowel me.

My youtube videos get flagged about once a year. It's all cool material, free and clear, they just troll for stuff randomly and wait to see if the end user caves.
I even had a music video flagged that was my own music, that I recorded in my own studio, from my own scores.
But when you contest it, it goes away.
I've heard rare horror stories about ppl who license royalty free stuff and the company didn't really own the license.
