yeah, see I think you are getting defensive. Are you offended that I asked if you were shooting a hollywood movie with your DVX? It was just a rhetorical question to point out that resolution isn't nessarily the most important consideration in choosing a camera. I wasn't trying to insult you with my "lame comments" and "remarks". ****, lighten up.

I would get an XL2, but I'm not rich and I just can't justify the extra $2500 (above what I spent on this cam) right now. If all video cameras were free I'd probably have a DVX100A and an XL2 laying around here. I think I'll wait about a year until I can get an XL2 at buydig for $4k and there's a $500 rebate :)

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Go the dry tape route with the DVX if you can or if you want to save yourself some hassle. There were good discussions on this subject way back when the cam first came out.

You just don't when to quit.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Tony-

You asked for advice on the issue of tape lube, and I gave you a succinct answer. You then said in a later post 'where's the proof?'

We have been using Sony tapes, and switched to MQs for a day shoot, and discovered on playback that we were getting dropped frames and the sound track was wrecked. We cleaned the heads, did the shoot, and everything was OK. But if we hadn't checked what was recorded on tape, we'd have lost the chance to capture that content.

Switching back to Sony tapes caused the same problem, with a camera that had never exhibited this behaviour. Again we cleaned the heads, and again playback was normal.

I therefore conclude the lube issue is a real one, and can bite you if you are not careful. Furthermore, cleaning the heads too often will cause unnecessary wear.

BTW, I thought your list of better features of the XL1s is legit; if you value those features (and some of them are certainly things I'd like to have on the DVX), then by all means go with that camera. Having shot with a borrowed one, I personally still find the picture to be too soft for my purposes.

I don't know why I can't prefer one camera over another without catching hell.
Oh?

Would be more convincing if you hadn't previously posted:

Tony, if you don't want an argument, then don't proactively invite one.

I used to fight robots but then my insurance company dropped me and refused to cover me.

But still, this is all mini dv.  With the 3ccd chip being only so big.  Panasonic's chips are actually 1 1/4 " instead of 1 1/3" like Sony?
DVX chips are 1/3". Depending on the camera (prosumer, of course), the Sony chips are same or slightly smaller.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

If anybodys going to do any dry lube verses wet lube wrestling, I pray to God its 2 women, and not Tony and Terry.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

dunno... maybe it's a "Pro" wrestling move.

I wrestled in school but never used a hammerlock. I did use a fireman's carry.

Only lost one match in my career.

It's coming behind your opponent placing your arms under his armpits and bringing both of your hands up around and behind his neck and locking your fingers together.
