The tape lubricant myth

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Tony.. good to see you still dont trust anyone lol..

But yes.. the tape lube is no myth, you will believe it the day you switch tapes and you get a head clog error on your camera.

I have talked to the tape guys at panasonic, and the Panasonic Rep for Canada used to be the Maxell rep.. and dont worry, everysingle one of em agrees.. the best advice they can give is to just stick with one tape.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Sorry, I know the wet/dry lube head clog question has been beaten down with the dead stick, and I don't mean to poke it's remains but I did some back research on this forum and I have one last question:

1) So long as the head isn't clogged (via a head clog warning coming on) are there anything specific to warn us that the head might not be working optimally (excluding actually drop outs and venetian scrammbles)?

The situation is, on a shoot I had to use 2 sony tapes (wet lubes) but I had been using dry lubes up to this point (not always the 63MQ but I think they were dry). Should I now stick to wet lubes or can I just shoot on the Panasonic 63MQ (Master Quality) dry lube tapes again? Should I not worry about the head not recording optimally at this point or should I go ahead and get it cleaned? I have but 30 hrs on this cam (and I know some of you like to clean the head every 20 hrs I can't afford to- I suppose every 75 hrs or so will have to do for me).

Cheers.

Just clean the head and stick to the MQ tapes, or whatever you choose. Don't mix them.

Wrong again! The consensus is to pick one brand and stick with it. How many frickin' times do you need to see it typed before it sinks in?!!!

Re: The tape lubricant myth

I poured doctor pepper after hitting the eject and everything but it didn't work!

Then I put it in the microwave to dry it out. It didn't work!

At least I know it's not a wet lube clog... :-/

I'm going to continue to use Panasonic even with this camera. I'm going to use the cheapest Pansonic tapes (I've got a mountain of them in my office) for everyday stuff and MQ's when doing something important. If I have any problems I'll let you know.[/quote]

You sold your DVX and got an Xl1s? :o

Re: The tape lubricant myth

aren't dry lube tapes pretty new? I can't see how would an advice on those tapes be written on a XL1s manual. And maybe the DVX is more sucetible to this kind of problem than other miniDV devices...

BTW, I shoot film sometimes, but differently from my video shoots, I never pay for the media... ;)

BTW2, Film is dead ;D ;D ;D

Hey Terry don't be a retard... what I've heard over and over is that Sony tapes have a wet lube and that they are the kind that you don't want to mix with other tapes. Basically every other tape is fine to mix.

Actually, in regards to this matter, you appear to be the one who is slow and limited in your capacity for understanding. ;)

Well, I know it's blasphemy around here, but the XL1s is better than the DVX100 in many ways... not resolution, but mostly in the usability department (for my purposes). Usability is more important than resolution to me... I'm sure that's why many people refuse to switch from the DVX to the XL2. I just got it and I'm already discovering things that are better about it.

whatever... SONY TAPES ARE BELIEVED TO USE A WET LUBE THAT CAUSES PROBLEMS WITH ALL OTHER TAPES. What is it that you don't understand about that?

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Obviously the only way to settle this is to grease one of you up with wet lube and the powder the other with dry and have you both wrestle for our amusement.

Whomever's stickier at the end is obviously correct...it'll be all scientific like.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

Amusing, but... We actually agree.

It's just that Tony had to ask over and over again before he understood.

In what ways do you think it's a better camera?

What are you using it for? (Surely not filmmaking?)

Just curious.

Re: The tape lubricant myth

I used the xl1/s for the past 5 years before moving to the dvx.
besides looking more professional (you have to admit, the dvx looks pretty rinky dink without a matte box and a follow focus slapped on it), i cant think of anything that is better about the xl1/s.
the dvx beats it in every category, except the interchangeable lens capability.
