The Strangers

Meh, this flick is a typical horror film, nothing too special about it. Funny games is definitely a better "mature" movie as you can really feel the agony of the family that was invaded.

Take A Lesson, Straight Out Of Simens Seminar

I took the Dov Simens film school seminar and this film is done exactly, down to the last detail, to his criteria.
The low budget horror film with one set, less than 10 actors, one big name, and keep it simple. I can tell you right now that the nine million dollar budget they report on the IMDBPRO is 90% P&A and salary. There is nothing cheaper that has 'movie' quality than this movie was to shoot. And a first time director, they're all laughing all the way to the bank with receipts for the first weekend double their budget. Wow, what a lesson in the business end of movie making. You'll be hearing more from them in the future now that they have some of the real 'green' stuff...

I loved this film. I havnt been to the theatres in a while, and once I went, I saw this over the happening (sorry shyamalan) and I really liked it. Reminded me of the old halloween-ish style filmmaking. Barrowed of course, but good enough for me to pay and view.

I wasn't going to review this film, but seeing that some people are recommending it, I had to. This movie was straight up horrorable. Okay, that was bad, I know. But it was a terrible film. Great first 30 minutes (as is always the case with these films - very easy to create unease) and then the movie just completely falls apart. The biggest flaw of the film is that it sets itself up to be a horror movie in the realm of Halloween --- spoiler ---- but then it just turns into a cheap stupid slasher film where the killings had no purpose. I'm fine with a people kill other people for no reason movie (I loved Funny Games for instance). But it poses as so much more at the beginning. Interesting characters. Very spooky. Looks like they're coming to this house for a reason. Nope! Just wanted to kill a few people and get outta Dodge.

Whatever.

Ehh...people get killed for no reason all the time. Sometimes another mf being crazy and killing someone is reason enuf. The major flaw in the movie for me was when he was getting ready to get some ass and he opens the door. I'm not answering jack if i'm getting some ass...no way no how.:)

Loved Funny Games, very different movie though.

Just saw Strangers and enjoyed it quite a bit. There was one part that I thought was really stupid. Guy with shotgun heads for the barn and leaves GF all alone in the house. Très stupide!
:D

Aside from that I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I can easily see the Sharon Tate murders as being a huge influence for this movie.
People do get killed for no reason, happens all the time.

Yeah, exactly. It made no sense. This girl that I love more than anything - shown by my desperation after she rejected my proposal in the first 30 minutes - I'm now going to leave in the house with multiple killers walking around. Huh???

Agreed, that part was really stupid.

Sometimes people do stupid things when they are in shock so I could forgive it for the rest of the movie. Or, maybe he was secretly pissed over the rejection and this was his way of paying her back. :D

I don't want to necro this thread but I want to add my 2 cents.

This movie is receiving a lot of heat for the murders being without intent, but for me that was probably the most gut wrenching part. For me, when I watch horror films (this one got me interested in the genre) I always assume things are more realistic than I should. So, for someone to come in and violently antagonize this couple and eventually murder them with NO intent is BRUTAL. I just think, how can a human being have ZERO morality and allow themselves to do something as horrific as this without any reason at all? Like, this wasn't compassion, this wasn't revenge, it was strictly evil. You're no longer human at that point, you are strictly a monster.

Gives me shivers, man. So much so that the first type of villain that I wrote in my first horror movie was a man with zero passion, morality, and emotion and killed for strictly killing's sake. What better way to write horror than to emulate was terrifies ourselves, right?
