FX6: The Sony ILME-FX6V Owners Club

I am curious (FX6 yellow issue).

But while we're waiting for an answer from DJ, does anyone know what the FX6 is doing at the start of the clear image zoom range when in 1080p? The full range goes all the way to 2x. Up to 1.5x, it's presumably doing some combination of cropping in and downscaling rather than making up pixels? Within this range (1-1.5x) is there any image-quality advantage to using S35 mode instead?

Given that I can't assign a button to S35 mode, CIZ is a lot more convenient and of course it's nicer to have a smooth... ahem... parfocal zoom on a prime than a punch in.

I'll test it this week if I've got time but just wondering if anyone has done this already. Most of the online discussion I can find assumes filming in 4K.

Don't wait for me to explain anything because I have no idea what the "yellow issue" is. Never heard of it. And I don't have Fecebook, so cannot access the link above.

Gamut clipping yellow, apparently. I'd never heard of it and haven't noticed it either.

Any opinion on using CIZ (below 1.5x) in 1080 vs S35? I'm sure you've tested it! Thanks!

Yup, the whole "Flexible ISO and Cine EI Quick" is somthing I'm unsure about.

I have been waiting since day one for the FX6 to have the Flexible ISO in Slog3 and having a LUT on the LCD. I tested it yesterday and it works exactly like the Fs5/a7siii work so for me that’s a brilliant new addition to the FX6.

If I ever tested it, it was a long time ago and I don't recall what I found. But to be honest, I probably never tested it in HD. I haven't shot anything in HD for about 8 years so shooting with the S35 mode really isn't something that is on my radar. Sorry.

OK thanks. Informal testing shows it's clearly good enough for my purposes. If I do more detailed testing after this job I'll post the results here.

Doug, you can view the post here. There are 58 replies with several experiencing the same issue. First I had heard of it.

Thanks for trying to enlighten me to this "problem" but that post and those images are worthless to me. Is this S-LOG3? S-Cinetone? A monitor LUT? Some other paint menu gamma/settings? At what IRE level does the clipping appear? Why doesn't he post parade scopes that show the alleged clipping? BTW, simply using the exact same exposure settings on two entirely different cameras is also meaningless. I feel like the poster doesn't really have any troubleshooting skills.

Completely useless. No way for me to confirm, disprove, or try to recreate the problem without a LOT more information. If this really is a legitimate issue, they have done a piss poor job of making their case. And you can quote me on that! :)

But I thank you anyway for trying. Not your fault people on Fecebook are clueless.

True, I've noticed a LOT of newbs on all of the Sony FB groups and as the prices of the cameras go down, the questions and issues become much more beginner-like. The FX30 forums are pretty much useless for any actual information, just newbs that literally have never shot anything other than on a phone with their "new cinema camera".

So since you nor anyone else here seems to have encountered it, I'm going to probably attribute this issue to user error. I would think if the FX6 had a problem this obvious, you and the other users here would have experienced it by now, it's not exactly a brand new camera. It did give me flashbacks of the C300 MKII Blue/Magenta light issue though, which was why I posted it.

Thanks. Do you still use MLUT?

I just tested it for the first time and yes, you're still monitoring with a LUT. (Also by "tested" I mean nothing more than putting the camera into that mode to check—I haven't actually checked out how the footage stacks up against the Cine EI mode.)

[SUP]I really like my FX6... but, it's only useful if you are allowed to use it.

I've done a fair bit of OS travelling this year (India, Bhutan, Spain, Portugal, Morrocco) and the FX6 gets a whole bunch of unwanted attention from officials. I'm just travelling for tourism, but many of the countries and even specific touristic sites within these countries have approached me to say that I cannot film (or in some cases, I must remove my Shotgun mike). The most stringent was Morrocco, where I was stopped at the airport by the police and got grilled if I was a reporter and where was my authorization. While I can talk around this, or just put it away... I notice that all the Mirrorless bodies that others are carrying don't get a 2nd look.

Now if there was only a Mirrorless body with eND then I'd really consider trading my FX6 in for it.

PS - I did check the rules for drones and they are a flat no go in Morrocco with potential jail time.... so that one got left at home.[/SUP]

I know the eND is wonderful - truly so convenient and such a joy to use - but in situations like that, wouldn't going for the mirrorless with a variable ND be the smarter compromise? (even as much of a PITA that it is)

Not only that, but some of those Sony mirrorless' look better than the FX6, IMO.

I use my A7siii when I want to go low profile

Anyone using the Sony FE 24-105 OSS G lens? and if so how do you like it?

I find the 28-135 covers a good range but is not quite wide enough for indoor shots.

I have one and I avoid using it as much as I can. It feels like a middle-of-the-road industrial lens. It's not sharp enough. It's not wide enough. It's not telephoto enough. And f/4 isn't fast enough. A boring lens that is made for people (such as schools, military, etc.) who just want something that kinda covers some middle ground so they might not have to change lenses as often. That's my 2 cents. I'm sure other people love it.
