FX6: The Sony ILME-FX6V Owners Club

I use SONY and PRGRADE 128 full size cards never an issue- would have more SONY"S if I could get them easily - always out of stock. I will not skimp on V90 Cards. Will try a SAN DISK at some point

I checked the 32G card with some available tools.
The capacity is OK
The W/R speed is OK (> 85-90 MB/s)
So I don't undestand
Would be intersted to know if someone is able to use 32G cards. The other I have are not SDXC.

Are you sure it IS SDXC? AFAIK SDXC cards are >32Gb and SDHC are <32GB. I don't believe the FX6 is compatible with SDHC...

I think you are correct that the 32GB will be SDHC not SDXC and should be formatted as FAT32 not exFAT. The good news is SDXC readers (like the FX6) have to be backward compatible (at least at the HW Level) to accept SDHC cards.... well that is what the spec suggests.
================================================== ============================

SD High Capacity (SDHC™) card is an SD™ memory card based on the SDA 2.0 specification.

SDHC capacities range from 4GB to 32GB

Default Format: FAT32
SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™) card is an SD™ memory card based on the SDA 3.0 specification.

SDXC capacities range from 64GB to 2TB

Default Format: exFAT

Thanks to all !
You're perfectly right.
I did not pay attention to that because on the amazon site they mentioned that the 32G is SDXC as the other... Actually it's not true, the 32G is SDHC despite it's V90 :)
I learned that there is no relationship ...
Thanks for the good remark. I will check tomorrow if the fx6 accepts a FAT32 card. Not sure.

I just got my Sony ECM-W2BT (Wireless Microphone MI Shoe & Receiver / Transmitter set) and the matching ECM-LV1 (Sony Stereo Lavalier). I'll post about the "good" stuff after a play more but 2 quick observations and a question:
- "Digital" mode is not supported on the FX6 - (The FX6 screen says "Unsupported MI Shoe Device") and you have to change the ECM-W2BT to "Analog" at which point it works
- Noise Floor is a bunch of Hiss. Much worse than the internal Stereo Mic or using XLR.

Q: I don't know what combination of FX6 / Transmitter settings would work well regarding the Hiss, so any suggestions would be great (the transmitter has a 0 / 10 / 20dB Attenuation switch).

Thanks
Nathan

Just to mention that I tested my 32G in FAT32. It was rejected by the FX6.

Conclusion: the FX6 does not work with 32G or less cards, whatever the speed.

Any hints on using the Mi Shoe (CH 3/4) on the FX6 would be great as I was hoping to record some speeches tomorrow using the ECM-W2BT and I should have some free time this afternoon to play with the unit.
Thanks
Nathan

Had a play and can't get rid of the background hiss regardless of the settings in the FX6 or on the ECM-W2BT. You even have it with all the Mics OFF and just the unit attached to the MI Shoe. Turning on a Mic then adds what sounds like pretty clear audio over the top of the noise but the noise is still there. As I have no such issue with either the internal stereo mics or XLR, I assume it is either the device or the fact it is using the analogue not digital IF. I wish the Digital Interface option would work as I presume it would be "clean" but at present this unit is terrible on the FX6. I also notice some audio delay (though I did not try to measure it) which does not help my option of it. Time to see if I can return it.

Maybe it would be best to test it with one of their compatible cameras from their compatibility list in the digital mode and see if there's a difference. The FX6 isn't on that list...

FWIW, I've used two of their other similar systems around 2015 and they were both horribly noisy (they are discontinued).

Any top handle alternatives to the stock that y'all are using? I'm rocking the wooden camera top plate in my rig but open to changing it up.

Upcoming FX6 firmware will enable touch tracking AF (as on a7siii/fx3)

Also getting the breathing compensation of the a7iv (which gives me hope that it will come to a7siii/fx3 as well)

+ RAW output over HDMI (in addition to SDI)

+ "bokeh control", meaning smooth ND/ISO exposure ramping as you rack aperture to expand or shrink DOF.

all in all, an attractive suite of upgrades! Sorry Doug, no new paint menus

Unfortunately that is true, but certainly not unexpected because there never will be any additions in the department. I'm been shooting with a beta V2.0 since last week and I can tell you it is fantastic. I'll be releasing a video in the next day or so.

Hey Doug, can you tell me two things about the V2.0 firmware that you've been beta testing?

I was wanting to know if you can use Picture Cache Recording in regular shooting modes (non-S&Q) and if so, what limitations it has.

Secondly, I was wanting to know if you for sure can use touch tracking on a joystick, or if it's limited to using the LCD screen. CineD.com claims you can use both, but Philip Bloom made a comment that it was limited to using only the LCD screen for selecting the subject you want to track. I was wondering which was true.

Thanks!

It all sounds great. Looks like they are lifting some code from the Mirrorless line. Any notes on changes in Mi Shoe? I've kept the ECM-W2BT due to re-stocking fees and the "hope" that the Digital Interface on the FX6 will work with with this (and I presume) other Mi Shoe accessories designed for Mirrorless devices.

Sorry, no changes to the MI-SHOE capabilities.

Yes, Picture Cache works with all codecs and frame rates, with or without S&Q motion. The amount of footage that buffer can hold depends on the codec and frame rate. 31 seconds is always the max, but if the camera is set for S&Q Motion @ 120 fps 4K XAVC-I, the butter can hold only 3 seconds. Which is still plenty good enough. I wouldn't need anything more than that 99% of the time. 3 seconds of 120 fps S&Q Motion equals 15 seconds of 23.98 video. So , in other words, the moment you hit the record button, you've got a 15 second clip immediately right out of the gate.

As far as I can seem, Phil is correct. I have not seen any official documentation for V2.0 so it is posible we have overlooked something, but I don't think so. I've mostly just been out shooting with it and I won't be getting into the details under the hood for another couple of days. So anything I say right now is subject to change. :)
