FX6: The Sony ILME-FX6V Owners Club

Good question. Not sure. Further forward and it risks getting in frame on wider lenses, further back and it gets in the way of other gear you might want to attach. It already sort of obscures the hot shoe if you put a wireless receiver on there. Honestly a lighter is probably the best solution.

In other news just ordered the basic Tilta plates and side bits. Not gone for the V-mount plate as I'd rathe ruse my old rails-mounted one so I can move it to adjust balance when it's on the shoulder.

Nice. What on earth is that dolly? Look a good size.

It's the Cinevate Atlas 200. A super-beefy 100mm bowl slider. Handy because you can change out the rails for different length (I carry 4' and 8' rails), and it's strong enough to support a fully-loaded jib - which I've used many times before for overhead shots, or as (not quite a "poor" but) a destitute-man's technocrane. :p

Ah right. Cinevate are long gone aren't they?

Had great joy with larger cameras with the Kessler Shuttle Dolly. For the FX6 it's a bit overkill.

Yeah, they seem to have quietly disappeared a couple of years ago (a bummer, because I really want their Mitchell adapter for my slider).

Lately, I've been thinking a great deal about what I could do to upgrade my setup grip-wise (for shoots that can't or won't hire in a proper grip) but every option I look at, although they might deploy quicker, or offer a little more rigidity while sliding - I'm not sure any of them would quite match the overall versatility of what I already have in the Atlas 200 and my Axis Jib.

For your sized rig the Shuttle Dolly would be fantastic.

The cinesliders are great for a more compact slider for big rigs. The 3ft one was very manageable.

I discovered another SW feature which exists on the FX3 and does not exist on the FX6: PC or Mac remote control via wifi and Image edge.

So at this time there are at least 3 features (mainly SW) which are available on the FX3 and not available on the FX6:
- Autofocus tracking
- Bluetooth
- PC or Mac remote control

I tried also this:

It works on the FX9, not on the FX6.
After connecting the FX6 to the PC/Mac, I get only this:

:/

First real gig with the FX6 after weeks of lock down in my country. Really digging the eND in the FX6, I think I could not go back to an ordinary camera without it... On the cons list... the standard LCD holder is really rubbish. Can't wait for the Zacuto to arrive. It's been over a month and a half from ordering it.

Hey Ben,

it was the MiniMax. DoP was okey with it (although the local rental shop doesn't have the female vest). FX6 was about 6 kg so still under the max limit which is 7.7kg I believe.

Cool thanks for the reply. Great to see it works well.

I keep thinking about the Minimax but it's such an annoying weight-range.

If I make the investment in a system I'd like to still to be able to use a 10Kg setup.

Sad that it's this making me thing of one of the knockoffs.

A friend of mine has a knockoff version, which has double the weight range as a MiniMax for half of the price... but the first shoot he had, it started leaking from the “counter weight” mechanism. I’m considering buying the Easyrig MiniMax for the FX6 my setups rarely are above 7 kgs. The price is still acceptable, about 1,200 Euros.

Presumably this means we'll also be able to get audio with 4K120, no? Either from the camera itself or via the analog audio input on the Ninja. That would be huge (unless I'm overlooking something that would prevent this).

Slightly off-topic, but I wonder if 8K recording will be available on the new ATOMOS Ninja V updated recorder. The Sony Alpha 1 does 8K up to 30p and I believe it has HDMI 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 has a specification for up to 8K 60p and 4K 120p.

https://www.hdmi.org/spec/hdmi2_1

I need to look up the data rate of 8K 24 - 60p versus 4K 120p. The Sony A7S3 and FX3 also both have HDMI 2.1 so maybe 4K 120p for them as well.

I'm also assuming that 8K recording on new higher-end Sony cameras should be coming by mid to end of the year.

Well, 8K 30p should be the same number of pixels/second as 4K 120p, no?

You're right. Assuming there is some down-sampling (which Sony seem to be doing for some of their ProRes RAW shooting cameras), I forgot that the Sony Alpha 1 is an 8.6K sensor.

downsampling? which ones? I thought there was just a crop in the 4k120p? like a 1.1x crop?

at 8.6k, I think you could squeak out 24fps (like maybe 25 or 26) at the same number of pixels/second as 4k120p (at 3840 wide)
