Seventh and last test-video from my Nikon D90. This is all shoot on D90 with my custom curve I called "Vision2 5229" named after the Kodak stock. Of course it doesn’t look something like that, but I just tried to find that low contrast look that the 5229 have. Its random clips filmed over five month time. Filmed on location in Sweden in Malmö, Göteborg, Värmland and Skåne.

Trevligt med fler Nikon svenskar här!

Nice clips, I did get a vintage feeling from the look!

Why do you make cruves in the camera instead of adjusting them later in post? I haven't tried the curves at all on my D90. :)

Detsamma!

Thanks!

I did it because I was curious. And I wanted more information from the shadows. There is nothing to do with them in this hard compression like the D90 video. But if you if you customize a curve with brighter shadows you get more latitude but a "flatter" image. Then I spent a lot time in post anyway.

very nice man. Would you mind sharing what the curve looks like? perhaps a print screen?

cool job Martin, keep them coming,

we should make a preset sticky, so we can can post and share nice curves :)

I second, third and fourth the request for the custom curve settings used on your video, Martin. Great work.

Thank you so much everyone ! I will post the curve on my website as soon I have the time!!! The prime set I have right now is: Zenit 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye, Sigma 28mm f/2.8 macro, Nikkor 28mm f/2.0, Nikkor 35mm f/2.0, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, Nikkor 105mm f/1.8 and Nikkor 180mm f/2.8. And think I used everything except the fisheye and the to tele. I used a old Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 pancake to. Al pretty old, fully manual AI-s lenses.

Beautiful work! I'm curious what the footage looks like uncorrected. Where on your website will you post your curve?

Keep up the great work!

...UH....let me make sure that I say out loud what anyone who has color corrected with D90 footage is THINKING.....

AWESOME!!!!!!

Whenever I color correct or make any other adjustments in post, on D90 footage....I run the risk of tearing my image quality to SHREADS. To adjust FIRST, in camera, with curves, ...it should alleviate at least one stage of this....YES?

...or am I nuts?

Im pretty sure that you are supposed to convert the d90 footage into ProRes before you edit so that you have a better codec to color correct in.

I have never tried it, but this is what i hear....

I think d90 footage holds up fine in cc, usually better than hdv for example. I also use a custom low contrast curve though, search this board for it. If you're using apple color you need to convert for technical reasons. Otherwise i don't understand what good a "better codec" would do, especially "before editing"? Why not after, and why not just as a final step? If you're not sure why you're supposed to do something you probably shouldn't be doing it.

The curve can be found here: www.langfilm.se and feel free to use it, but it wouldent hurt to credit the curve. I find this curve hard to film with so don’t except any magic here. Its look even worth when you over expose and under expose to. I just did this like a test and haven’t gone back to fix anything in the curve. I was thinking of post some before and after thing, and compare to orginal curves but I don’t really have the time right now. But here is to screen grabs from PP so no stair step fix here.

@ Siskel. No D300s is not worth it for me. Nikon disappoint me when it comes to video right now. But that will change! Its just a matter of time. 7D looks like a great camera too me. But i haven’t test it. And 5D mkII is a great camera no doubt about that.

I have no problem with CC the D90 video. I do it in PP with MB looks.

Thanks for al kind comments!

You have an impeccable design sense! I just watched all your vimeo videos, they are great!

Question: With the Nikon tone curve editor, can you adjust the level of the blacks? Also, can you create a curve on R, G, and B channels independently?
Just curious... Canon has such a primitive picture style maker.... it has none of that...
