The scene files

I just making test combining severe menus settings and incorrect white balance, in order to get different images...
If you want to try it, go outdoors (by day), put master ped. at -15. chroma level +7, color temp +7, gamma curve cinelike V, knee high, and then use the 3.2k white balance. Overexpose everything by 2 stops, and welcome to the world of music promos xD

and now someone will ask about doing this thing in post...
Well, if we do severe colour corrections in camera, we can go further than in postproduction after the compression. Of course, some settings produce noise, and we have to keep in mind to make tests before a "real" shooting...

Hey, Brian. Please include some help for us in DVX100(a) land so we can use the information without the ability to actually upload.

Scene file upload

Scene file upload

I uploaded two of the scene files that polispol provided. It didn't work as I expected, but here are a few observations:

1. After I "read" the scene files into the HVX, I could verify that they were polispol's because I the titles were altered. However, the Title character length limit appears to be 6 characters. I altered the titles in the text file to conform to that and it worked after I re-read them.

2. It appears that the scene file format is (after the headers) 8 digits, colon, integer, semi-colon, text description of function, colon, setting
For example:
00005006: 16 ; MASTER PED: 0

I tried setting the MASTER PED to -1 by changing the far right value in the scene file and then uploading it to the HVX. I edited only the rightmost zero to a minus 1. Although I can see that I'm reading the correct scene file (because the Title changes to conform to what was specified in the scene file), I don't see a change in the value of the master ped. So, duh, looking at the integer to the left (16) I noticed that it was 15 when the master ped was set to -1 in another portion of polispol's scene file.

I couldn't find a reference for the translations of the values of the integers. We should put one together. My rationale is that it is much quicker to make adjustments in my favorite text editor than to navigate the menu system on the camera for 24 different setups (4 scene files x 6 setups per file)

For settings that change across a spectrum, like chroma or master ped, it appears that the zero setting is either 8 or 16. Then increments follow suit, so you can just subtract 8 or 16 from the actual setting to get its value. So master ped of 14 would be -2 (14 - 16 = -2) and Chroma of 9 would be 1 (9 - 8 = 1).

The values of other stuff like Operation Type (0 = Video, 1 = Film) are just hard coded.

3. Synchro scan is some sort of hash. The comment section on the right doesn't even attempt to translate this, making it slightly more painful to map values to meanings.

4. [deleted at the request of polispol]

Notice that if you look carefully at polispol's scene files, it appears that they were edited on the rightmost values without editing the integer values. This didn't appear to work for me, but I have only my own camera to use as a test. Perhaps someone else can verify my observations.

I haven't tested out what setting values to impossible combinations does. I'm hoping the HVX sorts that out. For example, trying to set News Gamma when operation type is Film.

Anyone else care to weigh in?

Any chance we can try to put together in this thread the impact/range of values for the individual settings and people's experience of them, so we can attempt at constructing our own test scene files

Here's a fun one. The scene file settings allow you to bypass the ranges in the camera. Whether this actually effects the picture or not I haven't tested, but as a test one might try this:

Set
00005002: 5 ; DETAIL CORING : -3
in your scene file on the SD Card on your PC. Read the Scene in to the HVX.

Voila! I think you can do wacky things like enable News gamma in Film mode (news at 6, film at 11?).

Probably the easiest way to see if this really does anything is to set the frame rate to some of the new choices. For example, you can set it to 8,14,16,27, or 28 frames. Do they work? You tell me.

0000500F: 9 ; FRAME RATE: 16FRAME

DISCLAIMER: Don't come crying to me if you mess up your camera. Try it at your own risk. :badputer:

Tis is the best idea... interchanging very usefull experience!!!

May be is too soon for post scene files, I´ve experimented with very good results some settings tryng to imitate magic bullet effects... great!

A soon as I finish my project, let you know

I know I'm getting in a little late on this one, but I've been trying to use these scene files as a starting point, and some things aren't jiving. For instance, if I set the gamma to Cinelike V, then the knee setting is "blued" out, or unavailable. The V Detail Freq is also blued out. Maybe I need to have my record settings on something else, but I've tried 720p 24pn, 1080i 24p and 1080i 60i. what am I missing???

Knee setting in Cini-like gamma

Knee setting in Cini-like gamma

I believe that in the cinilike gamma settings the camera ignores the user set KNEE. You can switch it by changing the GAMMA setting to HIGH for example, then changing the knee then changing it back to CINI-LIKE. But I don't think this matters.

jarred and all:

i guess the idea of sharing scene info/looks has petered out. but i think it is a worthy topic to discuss.

anyone using the camera "love" some of their settings and are willing to share?

hope so.

"Original DVX look"

This is an aproximation to the original DVX "non A" colors and sharpness. These are the settings you need to change, comming from the original Scene file 6 (I'll only put the diferent values) :

Image detail +1

Detail Coring - 1

Color temp- +2

The rest should be default

Night Noiseless shooting with good blacks:

Everything default, with changes only on:

Detail coring +3

Master Ped - 3

That's about it for now. Try it out! :)

Thanks, I'll be trying this out as soon as my camera arrives. Although I'll be matching it to a DVX100a. Do you know what the differences between the DVX100 and 100a are? I suppose I'll have to expierement with the settings, unless some already has and c an share those settings ...

Mainly color temperature interpretation. If you want to match with the DVXa, do NOT use what I suggested. Keep everything default and use the scene file 6 preset. Be sure to set the DVX100a to scene file 6 or 5, and select cine-like D and cine-like for both Gamma and matrix. Raise down the master Ped to -2 on the DVXa, and -1 on the HVX. You may also try to fine tune just on both the master Ped and color temp settings. The difference should be minimal ( variation of + or - 1)

Warm Hi Con Great settings for sunset

Warm Hi Con Great settings for sunset

Polispol:

Thanks for listing your settings. I tried your Warm Hi Con Scene File 1 settings for some sunset shots at the beach today, love the way the blacks crushed, everything had a warm glow without much noise. Thought the chroma was going to be over the top looking through the camera's lcd, but I played it back on a composite ntsc crt monitor, and it looked clean. Can't wait to see it on a componenent Hi Def CRT.
I think the on board lcds give a false sense of color saturation.
Great work Polispol.
