The scene files

Since the SD files of scene files of the camera can be downloaded to a pc as a text files, maybe we can share some of our favourite settings...
I am working on 6 scene files to store, and have 6 different contrast settings in the wheel of the camera.
position 1 will be the less contrasty image,
and 6 the most contrasted image, changing black levels, gamma, matrix and colour.

I only use to work with the scene files memories.
Only with the colour/contrast items, not the general setup of the camera

Ok, here we go. My first suggested Scene File adjustments. It's a "work in progress", since it's not yet tested on the field, in a real shooting.
Some thoughts about this settings:
-If we see the original factory settings for the scene files, we can see that are too much... global. there is one for shooting fluorescent lighting, another to achieve sparkling images such as weddings, etc... So, I prefer to have my own presets based on fiction shooting.

-The idea is to have different levels of contrast, being scene file wheel 1 the less contrasty, and scene file wheel 6, the most contrasted image.
I've been working with the varicam and F900 for more than 5 years, and I use to change constantly the gamma curves, and some settings of the camera in order to match the scene that I have in front of me.
For example, it's not the same if we shoot in an interior, with controlled lights, and a ratio of 4 F-stop, in which case if I use the cine-like D curve (the most soft) I have too much information. I know what all of you are going to tell me, but believe me, usually, too much information means hours of color grading, and too much colour grading, sometimes means more grain. So, if we have a waveform, we can see if the whole signal fits inside the 105%
and if we have enough space below an up, we can use a more contrasted curve, in order to have a more efficient distribution of the signal.
If we don't have a waveform, we can use the marker option, of course

-As the contrast grows from 1 to 6, the presets are changing not only the gamma curve, but the most extremes, changes also the black ped. and chroma level. This is a personal thing. I like the saturated colours in the most contrasty scenes.

-I know that it must look difficult to think when to use every contrast scene file, but, if we use common sense, it's easy: exterior, shooting in backlight, a mountain, with bright sky... scene file 1. Interior, flat light, such as kinoflos, chimeras, etc... and too little contrast... scene file 6.

-Sorry for my bad English xD If something it's not enough clear, let me know, and I will try it to write it better!

So, here are my settings

Opinions?

Well, Jarred, it's only a cut and paste job, so it's very easy to put the files this way here, and are not too much long. And maybe one interesting thing, is if we can put some stills of every new setting.
Tomorrow I will try to capture a frame of every scene file that I made.

Thanks for the info. I agrre Jared, this has the potential to be the most useful thread in the whole HVX section.

I am experimenting with scene files too. I will post more info once I find something I like.

Hi, Jarred

I realize now that the SD card is specific to the HVX and not the DVX. I don't presume there's a way to save the DVX scene files ...

New Scene Files!

Now, I just divided the 6 scene in 3 important settings:

WARM PRESETS
Scene file 1: high contrast
Scene file 2: low contrast

NORMAL COLOR PRESETS
Scene file 3: high contrast
Scene file 4: low contrast

COLD PRESETS
Scene file 5: high contrast
Scene file 6: low contrast

I think that there is no "best setting". Exist one setting for every situation. My proposals are only general guides, but are totally personal.
I have stored more than 200 different settings for the varicam...

polispol- Hey, what a cool idea . . . posting the settings. Do you think you could include a small screen grab that shows what it (they) look like? Maybe Barry or someone will do a DVD?

Thanks!

Polispol nice work! You live in Spain (PAL country) and you use the HVX200E. Do you have a PAL HVX? How comes?

Polispol - good work, I used some of your setting last night, I would have never thought to drop the master pedestal that low.

I am also working on different white balance settings, I should have something decent to post in couple days.

Jarred - How about making this thread a sticky?

Anyone - I can't find the instructions on how to post photos in a thread. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hi,

I asked this in another post, but didn't get an answer...

I can't seem to figure out how to put scene files on my SD card using the camera. Is there a way to do this? I've looked at the manual and it doesn't have specific instructions on how to do it...

Any help?
