The Scary Look

I haven't had any time to do anything actually artistic with the DVX yet. I'm stuck at the script stage. But here is a neat shot I concocted while I had the camera hooked up to firewire. It's not much, I confess, but I am so astounded with the quality of this camera's lens, I don't understand the fixation on all these crazy adapters!

Anyway, here's my short 11 second clip. Let me know what you think. I know, it's not much, but I promise I'll have some substantial work up here within a month or so. I like to do things right the first time!

Well the scene settings are pretty much factory F6. I just put the camera up real close to my face and made sure it was focused. White balanced automatically to 5.6K.

Then in Vegas I used a contrast filter and then a color correction filter, and I shifted everything to a bluish-green and dropped the saturation and boosted the gamma.

Hah well I guess scary wasn't the best word choice. I just mean like that typical look you get in the recent movies like Saw and such.

i did a short film for the 48 hour film fest and i got stuck with "Ghost Genre". I had no idea how to shoot anything even close to that genre. I kind of made it up on the spot. You can take a look if you'd like...here's the link:

some of it turned out okay, some of it sucks. i wish i practiced before like you. Good move. The clip looks good.

Hmmmm, who would ever try and acheive that "Saw" effect?

I've seen SO many people try to make a film, and then once they figure out that you need actors and sets and lights and sound and all of that, they bail. Or, alternatively, they ignore everything you need to make a good film and make the crappiest crap you've ever seen. And then once they realize their crappiness, they come to places like this forum and ask questions like "How do you make video look like film?", or "How do you get the 'Saw' effect?" and so on.

Oh please don't even lump me into those people who think they can make the next best thing in film but then toss it all when they find out it actually takes work. I'm also well aware of the countless people looking for "the look" of whatever their fancy is. Yea I wrote that, and I still stand by it.

Spare me the talk down. In the grand scheme of things, I'm not going after any style but my own. But there is room for experimentation and testing to see what one is capable of. That is all I am doing at this point. When the time comes to prove my OWN God-given abilities I'll do it. For now I'm just having fun.

Fact is, I've made my own movie before and if you were to check it out you'd see there was no clear intent to copy any "look" but the one from my head.

So sue me if this reply is too defensive, but I don't fancy people calling me pink when I'm very much a different color.

Settle down, Beavis. I'm sure you're really talented and I'm not calling you pink.

My issue is that you're poo-pooing greenhorns for trying to get that Saw look. And then you post something that looks like...you know.

heh heh okay Butthead ;)

Whatever, I wasn't poo-pooing. I was just saying it was a common sight.

Plus, like my last post went, if I would've posted something of my own creation like going out in the farmland and filming various things, nobody would've looked or cared. Mention a particular movie or popular look, and hey! 350 views in 2 days!

Ok I've never posted anything I've done on here because of how critical people are of a cool or warm look even if thats what you are going for.....but you have done something that reminds of what i fool around with. I really want to make a horror flick....and heres my tampering with the adobe line in my living room. clip took a total of about 30 mins from film to post to finish. I'm not looking for critisim on this just wanted to show you that you are not alone.

I don't think the cut in between shots is the correct way to achieve this effect. Time remapping of the footage, where you ramp the speed way up and then suddenly slow down, would be much more effective.

gee i thought i said i wasnt looking for critisism on this clip. it's the way i intended it to be it's the look and style I was going for, and is there a correct or incorrect way to do things really? or is there just the way you are used to seeing things? hhmmmm not my idea of being original if it looks different than what I typically see so I change it to look that way.

Then why post footage at all? The point is to get feedback on your work, whether good or bad. Would you have approved if I had said that it was good?

And no, you don't have to do things a certain way, but some ways are more effective than others. The horror technique that I believed you're going for isn't achieved simply by jump cutting because the transition isn't smooth and it looks sloppy. Usually better to do time remapping and perhaps add a blur for that extra punch.

But hey, if that's what you were going for then all the power to ya. But it's just like I said, if you don't want people to comment on your work, why post it at all?

i do appreciate the feedback i didnt mean to sound snotty. this is why i dont post footage on here because theres always something not right to someone. i can see where it may look sloppy from youtube i assure you in RAW form running at full quality on my output monitor the effect i'm using works. I can also see where what you suggested would work and believe it or not I was going to do that but I just see it too much and I think it would work more with a faster shutter speed but i didnt shoot at a high shutter speed so i did the cut method. I kinda knew what the finished product was going to be like when i started but changed the way i did things when i sat down in post. overall i'm happy with it. but ya know something.....now that you mentioned it I think I may try something with what you suggested I'll repost in this category as SCARY! when i do.
