The Red Zoom:Double function or not?

Ignore the fact that red zoom will not be ready until after the red one ships for the time being. If the red zoom proves to be a great "compact" and sharp zoom and weighs no more than "five pounds" could it possibly serve as a double function zoom lens for both 35mm use AND in windowed 2k instead of using a specific s16mm zoom lens. The red zoom could also be used with a 2 x converter making it a fantastic all round piece of equipment.

If any of you think it is a bad or good idea please say so, it is a very tempting proposition but i fear it might end up being too much trouble and i should just shell out my hard earned money on a used quality s16mm zoom. I will be working on projects that require a deeper DOF a lot of the time hence the s16mm use on red as the prefered option.

Thanks for any input at all it is appreciated:dankk2:

I think you might be a pound or so light on your weight, but the concept is a good one. We do not have a doubler planned (yet). The only thing I see missing is that the RED Zoom will not ship until the end of next year. You may want to add that into your thinking.

Thanks for that Jim:) Yes i know the zoom won't be ready until then.

The possibility of a red 2x extender sound just great.

There is a lot of talk about 35mm lenses causing problems with stray light when using them in smaller formats such as s16mm. I am hoping the red one used with the red zoom will not have such problems.

An extra 1-1.5lbs would still bring the red zoom at or slightly below many s16mm zooms out there. :)

I think those comments were probably more aimed at people using 35mm lens on a S16 camera. If you shoot windowed on the Red one, you are just cropping the image so there will not be any issues relating to stray light.

i have used 35mm lens on Aaton 16mm camera's 50mm up to 400mm
i didn't see any problems .... a few shots using 35m lens on 16mm camera were blown up to 35mm ( 135mm- 400mm)
18mm is not going to be very wide in S16 mode ...
i've also used 1.4 & 2X extenders on zeiss 10-100T2 zoom and again no problem BUT i used the extenders more for the longer end - so if i needed a 20mm shot i used the 10-100 without a extender ... the final release for all use of extenders was TV NTSC ( transferred to digibeta) ...

a A/B comparision between a zoom/prime with and without extender = the BEST will be without extender BUT may times very good works too... each of us will have to make that call depending on the project ...

most of your question will be answered as soon as REDs are delivered to users .. till then it's a bit of a guess ... AND maybe some will be answered as the beta camera's go into field ???

when RED 103 shows up i'll be testing scaled 2k and S16 mode to see if they will intercut etc ...

Hi Michael,

As there is no spinning mirror or ground glass in a Red camera, and the 2K is windowed, you won't have anything to worry about IMHO.

Michael.

I am going the S16 lens route for the moment with the intention of selling that on and buying the Red zoom when it becomes available. I like your thinking, because the projected weight for the Red zoom is very attractive, but ultimately I can't ignore that fact that the zoom won't be around for a while. What are you thinking of shooting with until the zoom becomes available?

Thanks guys for the info on light stray, one less thing to worry about.

Martin i have reserved the red 300mm as i have some wildlife and nature shots to do throughtout the summer & autumn 2007, hopefully it will be ready when my red one will be shipping.

I need to practice (so much to learn) with the red so i will probably be getting a 35mm still prime lens to start off with. Theres not much scope for a quality wide angle still lens so it looks like it will be a 35 or 50 prime to start with. I kinda hoped it would teach me good habits like moving closer to the subject rather than just using a zoom.

My main concern just now is trying to get a 8.5 or 9mm s16mm prime if i can get one for about $1,000 but i am not sure what you can expect in quality for that kind of money as prices appear to be going up sharply of late!

I plan on using the Red Zoom lens for everything including 4k and 2k windowed.

In the time between Red camera and Red Zoom delivery, I will probably rent out my Red camera, and they would have to rent a lens from a rental house.

I am certainly going to use still lenses as soon as the mounts are available so that I can get to know the rig, but - I too am likely to rent out the head more during 2007 waiting for that Red zoom.
