The Red Manual

Here's a topic for ya: Let's talk about something we will all use at one point or another, something included with the camera, but forget how important it is until we have to read it:

The MANUAL

As anyone who owns a Varicam or SDX900 will tell you, we are blessed with the best manual ever created for a camera: The Goodman's Guide.

Mr. Jannard, since you own every camera there is, I am hoping you have one of these manuals as well.. Just follow that lead sir, that manual is fantastic! It even comes with preset looks on a small CD you can DL in the camera

Jay

Manual! Manual! Manual!! Very important... Not flashy, but worth evey cent

Of course.. im sure RED will have absolutely no issued with Goodman or any other guru creating a guide for the Red camera.

Its important to remember though that the goodman guide isnt an acutal oem manual.. the oem manual is that white 8x11 booklet that is kinda useless. The goodman guide is a (albiet very close) 3rd party product.

The HVX Book is great. I'm sure Barry would do a killer job with the RED manual. He really knows his stuff and knows how to communicate it. In collaboration with the RED team I bet they could come up a really superior big fat spiral-bound masterpiece.

Can you Jarred help with that?

yeah would be great if he did too.. who knows maybe we can get him over to the Red side. :)

Yes Barry come over to the Red side. He would be way more help then just writing the manual but Wow if he was to write the manual and be there as the camera was being built it would be the allotment manual. And if it came with the camera that would just rock

yeah that would be great.. now that Barry is doing Color and the books are sprial bound hes giving Goodman a run for his money.

I know it's probably fanciful, but if Jim could get together some top DP's, some of whom are proficient with high end digital and some not, to do a DVD, then it would be a paradigm breaker.

Imagine a DVD where the cinematographers run through studio and location (exterior) scenarios, with detailed menu explanations, and workflow production tips. And maybe even a quick post-script on post-production possibilities.I would be willing to pay a few hundred deniros for that.

Heck, if I were to make a list, I would include, Barry, Jared, Mathew Libatique, David Mullen, Declan Quinn, Emmanuel Lubezki, just as an idea for a wide variety, but passionate participants.

And if you include a Discount with the purchase of the DVD's, for a RED DVXuser bootcamp, then it'll be even more synergistic.

Great idea but also include the audio experts like Oleg Matt tim and phil etc.

The only problem i see is that for such a manual to be really useful you really need many of the tips, tricks etc of using the Red camera. That might not happen until the camera is out in production for some time. There will be lots of third party efforts at selling us various manuals and DVDs so why not something like D and G mentions but done through various guys with the camera and experience here on this forum in coloboration with Red. I am all for the DVD style of manual and learning tips in ADDITION to a really good book. This camera is for long term remember ten plus years maybe, so worth waiting six months say for a quality DVD set of tutorials and tips and a good in depth manual say for $200. I would buy that and gladly give Red and you guys some royalty why not.

absolutely right Mike.. it would be a waste of time to release a guide in less than 6 months after release.. the real world application testing just wouldn't be strong enough for anyone to teach.. it would be more preach.

Here's an idea...

-maybe it would be cool that instead of a book (or with it also) a short interactive movie walk-through came on a small disc.

Red girls could provide pleasant voice guide :) , while wild-styled motion graphics could show the features of the cam

If all the funds are oriented to the cam production, and as Jim says they "don't have any budget left for a box.... "
I'll do it in my spare time. For free.
Just send me a voice data and 3d model in any 3d software format (when it's finished...:))
