The Rat King (short film)

I would've liked the intro to be a bit shorter. The age old saying of "show don't tell" comes to mind here. A lot of it also isn't necessary and would've been better if we actually just saw the world instead of getting it set up.

Great visuals. However the colors were a bit extreme, which may be what you were going after. To me it looks like it could have been just a tad desaturated even if this were the case because I felt the colors were TOO extreme.

Sorry....... I didn't like it at all. Seems like some sci-fi movie you catch on tv like around 2-3 in the morning. IMO even if you are doing fantasy you still need to make it believable and I just never felt connected. Also poor choice on screen resolution (1280x540). Finally agree on saying that the intro was too long.

I think as a film maker you need to create something that people would want to watch, I think you should find that great story first before shooting another project.

I thought it was badass. Life4eva can go Autofellate if nothing meets his stupid standards on tv. Every film is a learning experience, and I thought it was way sick. Keep it up.

in all honesty ill thought it was bloody awesome, only quarter way through so far but had to write this, loved the style, the fluidness and creativeness, am blown away at how good this is, them guards with forced smiles have scared the crap out of me, thats messed up, back to the film now, this is really good

Thanks renegadwill! Yeah, I don't really see any merit in their criticism, so I'm not really concerned with online forum opinions. My art teacher always told me to be reserved when listening to the judgements of other's interpretations, especially those who are not artists themselves.

So you are assuming I am not an artist? I stated clearly what in my eyes is how I honestly felt, nothing more or less. Before you go and dismiss someone, stop and think why I said what I did......

Life4eva, this isn't ur lil blog where you tell people their film is crap. If you were going to criticize someone, make it constructive. These forums are all about learning and growing, not about being a dickhead.

I loved it... there aren't too many shorts that I will sit through. I was just a little picky on a few things... the color correction was extreme... too blue... but then again it was prolly the look you were going for since the world was 'toxic'. The only other thing that I would have liked to see was a bit more of the frame in focus... a lot of scenes had very shallow dof. A film doesnt always have to have shallow dof to be cinematic, but maybe it was a characteristic of the main character going through withdrawal symptoms. All in all... Kick ass film man.

ok, good film here is my take:
Pros: The Starting art montage of he past really worked well and was well executed, kudos
Cinematography was done very well, nothing was poorly lit and everything had good roll off, very film like.
Locations and set design was also very well done and well executed, I saw a few thing that I could recognize or have but very believable.
Makeup was very well done with the exception of our main characters teeth, Way too white for post nuclear war living as a slave underground
Special effects where done well, Acid rain set extensions.
Audio! Finally all the voice audio was level, score was not over powering vocals and fx where spot on.
Cons:
Now these are just critiques I saw in no way am I saying this is the way you should have done it, but I would have.
Length; simply too long for a story this short, could be cut quicker and or had more angles to have quicker cuts in each scene. For me the long pans and tracking shots did not work for me, atleast not for this genre film. this film being 30min should be more around 20-22
Acting: I feel that the main characters acting came over as a little to much during the dialogue parts and I would have had him take it a few steps down.
The story had all the elements to make a shot but in my opinion could have been beefed up a bit.
Audio: I know I said I like this except for the audio logs he did. IT was a different voice, If he where to log a audio track he would have sounded like he was in a mask not in a studio, now if you wanted to make us hear what he was thinking then I would say that works, but the way it was doesn't jive for me and pulled me out of the film immediately.

Good job and I look forward to seeing other films!

Jon

Also poor choice on screen resolution (1280x540).

What does this even mean? Just because he matted it? I always matte my shots. It's not so much to emulate anamorphic lenses, but to keep consistent eye levels and re-frame things. And also just because 2.35 looks better to the eye.
