Bring back model sets! The thing about the old SW films is that they just felt more authentic. CG'd out, I am.
When I think about the genuine "Star Wars" moments in the prequels, they are all conducted on a tangible set, not a blue screen. I'm all for GL sportin' digital, but I think overdoing the CG might give the impression that digital is just that--CG.
Also, that scene on Kashyyk (sp?)--bringin' in the Wookies for nothing? That crap just felt so damn forced (pun unintended). It had no place in the movie, there was no plot to it, it was just a way to please old-school SW fans.
Hypothetical: Let's say that there was NEVER an original SW trilogy. Lucas's first film being Episode 1. Lucas would NEVER be allowed behind a big budget feature again. Lucas should praise his lucky stars that he's got such a following, because without the original SW fans, this story would be left untold. It might not be fair to make that comparison, because the world is definitely a different place than before, but you get my drift. RotS is decent, but that's it.
Lucas is a good storyteller, but he lacks in directing and scripting. Episodes 1,2,3 just lack that "magic" feeling. RotS comes close, but it is still fourth best. Of course everyone is going to be parading this movie, and Lucas is smart for his strategy. Strategy = make atrocious Episode 1 and 2, set bar so low that anything above is hailed as great.
Don't get me wrong, I own both Episode 1 and 2 and I will own Episode 3. There are good elements and they outweigh the bad, but these are not of the caliber of the original SW trilogy. My opinion.
Upon my second viewing, RotS wasn't as good as when I first saw it. GL has had way too much time milking the original and not enough time behind the camera. There's no question of how GL has taking technology under his wing and advanced it in the biz--but hailed as a great director is just preposterous to me. He has a vision, but the execution is a joke (visually awesome).
