The pigs are flying, the fat lady is singing, hell has frozen over,

yeah. Would be cool if the price goes down. Yeah the macs look cool, but still am not convinced that a 2.7ghz cpu should cost 3x more than a 3.8ghz Intel.

I'm not sure of that either, but you can't compare like that. I'd say my 800mhz G4 is at least 50% faster than my 1.4 gig pentium. Go figure.

yeah.. the only thing I am missing is my Microsoft Photodraw version 1999. Just because of that stupid program, i still gotta have the PC on standby.
I agree, Jarred . . . Microsoft Photodraw ROCKS! Microsoft Photodraw is one of the most underrated apps ever. Isn't it great? I own Adobe Illustrator CS, but Photodraw can't be beat for simple, quick things.

I'm actually a closet Mac person who switched to PCs long ago due to price/performance issues-- started on Macs when they still had monochrome screens and looked like beige portable TV sets. In the early '90s I had both a Mac Quadra 700 and a 486DX66 PC on my desk. Then, I went totally PC after Pentiums came out in the mid-90's. I own legitimate copies of all my Windows software, and even multiple licenses of the same software, since I now have three heavily loaded WindowsXP machines in my home.

But, I've been salivating over Tiger's new core OS' reported stability and UNIX kernel. Not to mention the ultra cool Widget apps on the desktop. And of course, what appears to be THE best desktop editing app ever, FCP. But I think I'll wait out Apple's major processor switch next fall when they move from the Motorola/IBM PowerPC to the Intel processor architecture (not to mention, the wait for the new OS and rewritten apps to work with it).

Meanwhile, I'll be still suffering many, many control-alt-deletes and late-night fdisk'ing while WindowsXP continues to corrupt itself on a daily basis . . .

only I would ask this question, but does your computer have name?

mine is "BadBoy G5"

please tell you didn't name it "Jarred's computer"

btw: this is one of my favorite apps in the world:

shareware, or at least it was a while ago.

Oh boy.. see now that is why i didn't want to switch to Mac.. cause all the friggin weirdo's that name their computers and put apple stickers on the back of their green convertible VW bugs.

I have a friend who works for Apple and he said they anticipate the Intel processed Macs just after Christmas. This may be a rumor, who knows, but that would be freaking cool.

I agree with you Jarred on the price of the 2.7ghz Macs. They shouldn't cost as much as they do, but us PCers (me right now), have to understand that Macs are sick in terms of stability and performance. I have a 2.26 ghz Dell with 512 mb RAM and I haven't had any major problems yet, knock on wood. I do think that Macs are the better systems to be working with for editing, but I think PCs can render graphics faster. Especially with AMD 64 bit processors. Those things are sickly fast.

LOL..

well, when you acquire a few of them plus lots of harddrives, you got to start handing out names. you'll understand someday, young one.

peace-out

Just an FYI to people thinking of buying/upgrading their processors. While the AMD processors are fast, and Intel is trying to position their 64-bit processor like it's the Second Coming, keep in mind, that NONE of the applications we tend to use are 64-bit (Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, etc.). As far as I know, the performance increase when using the 64-bit version of WindowsXP with 32-bit apps is negligible.

Yeah.. I just got a dual core AMD 64 4200 system last month, and it screams... and was about the same price to assemble as a 1.4ghz mac mini. Apples should actually be cheaper.. i mean its one company, there is a middle man taken out of the business model and the fact that the options are limited to less than a dozen systems compared to the 100s of PC models the bulk manufacturing scale should average out.

HA! LOL! (All my computers are named after their processor. The only sticker on my car is the one that says "Police Interceptor.")

This may be true, but from what I know they do load and render graphics much faster than a pentium could ever do.

Well, maybe I'm wrong and I'm sure AMD is probably THE way to go for PC hardware for max speed. I just think it's REALLY disingenuous when PC sales guys try to sell users on 64-bit "speed" when there really are no 64-bit applications written yet to take advantage of the architecture. Am I wrong, is this changing soon? I'm just getting tired of buying a new processor every six months.

I agree with the fact that Macs are more stable. But the high price is what keeps me from buying one. The fact that there is no competition in the Mac world is what makes it so expensive, they can charge whatever they want.

I wish the prices would come down a bit, because I would love to have one. My wife has an iBook that her school provides to all of the teachers, and it's a lot of fun. It won't run Final Cut though, I already tried.

Another reason Macs are more expensive--it's not just a computer, it's a piece of furniture--they're pretty.

As a PC user, I'm the minority in my area. Here in Silicon Valley, it's Mac world. I live about 5 minutes from the Apple Campus.

Not trying to rush you into a Mac purchase, but the 1st Macs that will use intel processors are the lower end of the spectrum (mac minis, laptops, etc.). This (according to Apple) will take place during the 1st half of 06'. The G5 / G6 (Whatever it will be called) will not be transitioned COMPLETELY until 2007. Also, once the transition starts next year, most all of the programs will be shipping with universal binaries for both x86 and PPC in the same package (at least that is what was said at the developers conference).

The best time to buy a high end Mac like a G5 may be in the next few weeks as the Dual Cores are released and the prices are reduced for older models. Otherwise.....2007 is long way away.

What's a virus?

Is it because I've only been running PCs since '87 or so? Maybe I just haven't been around long enough to encounter one? Not on my 5 at home, or the 200+ at work.

I feel SO left out. :(
