The Perfect Sound (7D Short)

Hey there, this is a short film me and some friends made for a 'make a film in a week' film competition. The theme was 'Visualise Sound'. The competition was sponsored by ASUS laptops, so we had to include a reference to their new notebook soundsystem, but hopefully the film still works.

We shot in 1080p on a Canon 7D. Please watch on high quality if you can!

Be great if anyone reading this could watch it and give some feedback!

Cheers.

Fun idea. But, your ending feels like a cheat.

Also, from an editing stanpoint, some cuts/dissovle felt a little loose to me and sloppy. It felt like a rough draft, not a final edit.

I liked the concept, but the CU shaky cam drove me nuts, and the flickering warning at the end also irritated me. The actor never sold me on the fact that he was really a "sound mixer". The foot pump felt totally out of place.

Overall good job.

I hadn't read your description before watching, if it was something that was done as a commercial I though it was lacking, but after reading your description of why you did it I think this is a great concept.

As ikander mentioned the editing could be better, some of your exposure was a bit hot, but I think overall you did a fantastic job. Keep working at it and your execution will get better. As far as the camera work goes, your the only one who knows what you intended to do, if this was the style you chose then it was fairly good, if it wasn't then you need some practice. The thing that I think feels a little odd is that if intended you have this frenetic camera perspective but slow pacing. There's a balance there you need to find and it will flow better.

Well done, I look forward to seeing more from you guys.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree with many of the comment here, all i can say in response is that we pretty much scripted, filmed and edited it in about 5 days, so some things were inevitably rushed.

Thanks again though.

Chef Tony says: "Too mucha 'da rack focus" Which is too bad, because the lighting is great for this scene, you just went overboard on the shallow depth of field. Think less is more. We'd rather see that the label on the jar says "A cat purring" then to have it obscured just for artifice sake. The sound effects were great and your mad scientist played the part well. Didn't care for the sketchy titles at the end either. Overall great job though!

Yeah, these are some decent points. I personally like the shakey look of it, but i can see what it's a bit too much for some people.

To be honest, we didn't actually always to aim to have it this way. I actually had two DOP shooting this on Canon's, one was shooting the shakey, mad stuff that ended up in it, and the other, a more structured series of shots on a tripod.

Unfortunately the macbook we were using to edit went crazy when we were importing the 'structured' shots, and we lost them all! Seen as all the time we'd booked with the studio was done, we couldn't reshoot, so had to work with what we had.

I'm still very pleased with how it ended up, but see your point, and probably would have made quite a few changes if we had all the coverage we needed. Oh well, that's how it goes with filmmaking i guess.

Editing?

Editing?

Any chance you guys could give some more specific editing criticisms, as i actually edited this alongside someone else and it would be interesting to know which parts you thought worked and which didn't.

well i've heard of the film greats say If you can watch a film without sound and understand the concept thats a great film(im paraphrasing his words but that was the gist of it)my point is,the cinematagraphy looks nice but the story kinda left quite a bit out. Very Creative concept, keep the creativty coming.

You watched a filmed called 'The Perfect Sound', without any sound? That's pretty crazy dude.
