The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Alright, so I got some footage hitting Vimeo. A series of clips in fact.

Today, I walked out with the stock lens to the beach and was like "Ah what the hel, let me try the 2x crop out".

I shot some construction workers, brought the camera home and popped the SDHC card into the PS3.

Uhm... well you be the judge.

Check Vimeo soon. I pop between the stock lens at regular fov, 2x and 4x crop, the 50/1.4 Zeiss Contax at 2x and regular FOV, and the 85/1.4 at regular FOV and 2x.

Also got some extra glass in front of the camera. The Tiffen Ultra Low Contrast Filter, Hoya HMC ND8 and Hoya HMC Circular Polarizer.

They're seperate clips that I just now shot to illustrate the crop factor.

The other stuff I have to ProRes and cut before I can show it. MJPEG is a straight shoot and upload operation.

Here's the 2 x In camera crop version: http://www.vimeo.com/4603861

EXTRA bad ass. I absolutely love it. Will probably get the Ultra Hight Contrast filter as well.

The contrast, to me, still can't be dialed down enough. ULC helps a lot.

hehe everybody was whingeing about the 2x crop factor of the GH1 and now everyone gets excited about extra cropping. bugger that I'm going anamorphic.

Did you record the HV30 to HDV or capture the HDMI to Cineform or uncompressed?

Only 25p HDV and I used Cineform HD & Adobe Pr, AE CS3 for editing/post. (25p timeline) I'm not saying the highlights were bad on the HV30 footage,
just not as creamy, directly out of the camera as the GH1 stuff - To me . The HV30 belongs to a friend of mine & I haven't had much experience with it's
settings and such. I know about the cell phone trick tho & I hate that Auto Gain Bull S@%$.

I know the GH1 has aprox 6 stops of usable dynamic range in video mode.
Does anyone know the dynamic range stop values of the HV30 and the HVX sensors? Just curious. :)

2x is definitely useable. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use it instead of going out and purchasing anything in excess of a 180/2.8 Contax Zeiss.

That's my immediate opinion.

It adds another notch of versatility to this camera that the competitors don't have. And I am PRETTY sure that cropping out of the image in post won't yield the same results. HOwever, I've yet to try it.

Note: this is available in 1080 and 720. SO it's not cropping a 720 out of a 1080, you can crop in 1080 and still use the 1080 frame.

Nope. I didn't see any difference in noise characteristics at first glance. And on a large LCD I surely couldn't tell the. at x4, yeah. x2, nah.

It's been touched on a little, but I'm still curious how much you can color the GH1 footage in a program like Magic Bullet before the compression becomes an issue?

As a shooter, I've been color correcting XH-A1 footage for the past couple of years and have been plenty happy with the results. Can I expect about as much from the GH1's codec?

Keep your eye out on my vimeo and the threads here. Got a narrative scene being graded right now (not Magic Bullet, though), H4N audio.

You'll know as soon as I know.
