The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Hey Kholi - would you be able to eventually post your workflow? Maybe even start a new thread titled "Kholi's GH1 Workflow." I'm really curious to know what in camera settings you're using (I thought the Willis Chung vs. Shaky Hands footage looked great, BTW), as well as the steps you're taking to 1.) load/open the AVCHD footage onto your Mac and into FCP, and 2.) go from 60p to 24p.

I believe a lot of this has been touched on here and there, but to consolidate it all into one post would be extremely helpful.

Is this asking too much? Or are they trade secrets?

Nah, I'm planning on it. No worries. Everything I found in the camera will be posted for you guys before you get you cameras or get a chance to handle one.

Sonic has uploaded some actual 60P. If you're using Final Cut you should try it:

1) Log and Transfer the AVCHD footage
2) Create ProRes Project with a 23.98 1280 x 720 Square pixel sequence
3) Drop the 60P file right onto the timeline, click NO to the conform confirmation.
4) Right click the clip, scroll down to SPEED, select SPEED and then turn Frame Blending OFF
5) Render if you have to. My Quad Core 3.6Ghz Tower doesn't need to render anything, oddly enough. But the Quad towers at the office do. I suspect it's the difference in GPU.

based on a previous interview on a panasonic rep ( http://www.dpreview.com/news/0903/09031901panasonicinterview.asp ), they had problems processing b frames.. which im guessing is a processor limitation.

They shouldve tried other easy to process codecs.

Based on the stuffs ive read with panasonic's avc cds and brochure, lack of b frames could be the problem with artifacts not the bitrate.

Yeah from the interview he says:

Presumably you're using different compression, codecs and so on, so is there a difference in the video quality between the GH1 and your best camcorders?

In terms of resolution the camcorder is still better because they offer full 1080P (50i / 60i) codecs, and also the compression is a little bit different; a camcorder can manage compression wisely, with B pictures, which this one doesn't have. Of course in the future it will get better

And from a tech document on compression I've been reading:

Using B-pictures increases the picture quality, but adds about 120 ms to the coding delay to allow for the picture reordering

kholi... what's up with that opening shot!!??? i hope it was at 1080p and with VR on... coz it was jellowtastic!

yeah. LOL. That's why I didn't do it to the rest. No worries dude. Just a mistake on my part outputting.

I appreciate any video you can show us man. But if you can...could you retry Vimeo? I love downloading the original to view in my player bypassing Vimeo/YouTube compression. Much appreciated...thanks.

Edit: My bad...I see that you've already started.

I liki that camera of yours. Where can I git one plis? Good looking stuff. Any new thoughts on the 1080p? The GH1 is gonna be a great camera for music videos. Get your investment back in no time.

Just look for yourself. Most of that footage is 1080/24P. Download the file. I guarantee the original looks about 30 percent better.

The download looks good to me. I won't go analizing it frame by frame though! I don't know about what anybody else thinks but this little camera looks great. Thanks Kholi for sharing. Is the end of the video GH1 too or is it Red?
