The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

My final testing period's gonna be shutterspeeds in 720/60P, and I'm officialy done putting the camera through the ringer.

Still coordinating an actual shoot, just bare with. It'll happen soon.

Kholi,

Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, I really appreciate it and am greatfull for your time and knowledge!

Any future plans for resolution test with charts?

Chip

Very interesttting. At what shutter speed were you testing? I'm guessing NOT 1/50th, right? 1/120th?

Actually? it WAS at 1/50th. But Daniel L and I sort-of concluded that it couldn't possibly be right because 1/50th in 1080/24 and 720/60P did not produce the same scrolling waves under Fluos.

I'm gonna walk out and do some human tests at 1/30, 40, 50, 60, and up in 60P and drop them all into the timeline to see how they play.

ChipG -- No problem man. Only, I'm not a res chart guy. I'm "organic" and stupid, I only go by what I see. I promise you that Resolution Charts will start popping up and they'll be done by people with more competence.

Only thing you guys are gonna get out of me are stills and actual footage. I'm gonna be using this sucker for EVERYTHING from now on, barring I get the audio situation workedo ut.

My HPX170 has been sitting sad and lonely. It shouldbe sad,it's no longer going on trips with me anymore.

Aren't you a bit rude on 1080@17mbps ?
While I agree it breaks on fast action, it might work pretty well with normal action (ex: walking steadicam). So you could shot most of the scenes 1080p24, and switch to 720p60 if there is some fast action to deal with.

I might be being a bit hard on it, but to my eyes, viewing raw footage, it turns to absolute mush on fine detail when you start moving. It's very evident in Philip bloom's first footage.

Very evident in my own footage.

Even in a static scene with lots of green detail I noticed that parts of the image turned to mush. Especially evident on larger screens.

Everyone's mileage may vary and by the time US cams hit, they may ALREADY have an update that fixes the VBR. And look, dont' take my word as gospel. When everyone gets the camera and starts testing they'll find out what works for them.

For me, personally, the 1080/24P is inadequate because it's forcing me to check what I do. I do NOT want to be checked if I just want to pan the camera. I do NOT want to have to avoid high frequency detail JUST because it'll turn to crap.

I'm just giving the good with the not so good from my own perspective and this is what I've found.

:( is it me?

:( is it me?

I certainly ask with respect: Is it me or does this still look a tad like video?

-BTW I know Philip's an expert
Is it the lens? The DOF? or am I crazy?

On the other hand I saw Matt's D90 feature trailer and I could think it was shot in film (with Jello ™) and heavily compressed yet still film-looking; "organic?" you could say.

Note: this is not a Matt vs Philip thing it's not even the cameras could someone tell me why I perceive it so? is it the speed?

You can of course, say I'm just nuts. :2vrolijk_08:

Cheers

it's really funny because during the course of the d90 being released, a friend of mine said everything he saw looked like video...it's really just user taste. i personally think they can both look like video or film, it's just what you record.

i guess, if you record a birthday party, puppies, kittens, driving and walking down the street it's not going to have a very filmic look to it.

Pal = 25P

50P + Slowmo = 25P

Not 24P

That might be why you're seeing the slight video look. If I remember properly, Phillip has a UK camera and that means he's on 25P, not 24.

Also consider that Phillip really doesn't shoot anything narrative, and you're comparing the work to narrative shooting. That might help out a little.

Again, just be patient, that's all I can really say.

I doubt 1fps difference change the look, but beside not being narrative, it's probably the grading applied in Magic Bullet that was not intended to be "filmic". MB has a lot of presets other than film emulation.

have you ever seen Sean of the Dead Behind the Scenes? That's what 25P looks like.

Thank you Car3o.

Jeez man.

However it looks better than HV20/30's /A1's with adapters with the footage I've seen so far. Especially Hunters 1080P frames and Blooms footage.

I dunno about the A1, Pappas. I remember when Elton used to post footage from the H1 and A1 in high motion places, the HDV held up quite nicely. The actual image in comparison with adapters is really no contest, though. Even the 1080/24P versus that is just out of the question on comparisons.

It'll be up to people getting the cameras and judging! Again, my word's NOT Gospel, I just feel like if 1080/24 is gonna work it needs to be locked at 17mbps but I sincerely hope to be proven wrong when more people grab the camera.

It's almost here!

Didn't saw Sean of the Dead, and I don't look BBC (I'm in France), but aren't they broadcasting @50fps ?

As for the 24 vs 25fps, I hardly figure the difference, mathematically it's just 4% less... Like if you were watching 58fps instead of 60fps, same difference.

Well it looks beautiful no doubt about that, crisp and clean, great colour and light, I'm only talking about the way things move. The "tracing" objects leave behind (if you know what I mean) I'm very sensitive to it.

I've found 2 other GH1 videos where that "look" is gone, it looks totally filmic (the movements), at least to my eye.

One is Philp's btw so I know it's not him nor the camera.

Sean of the Dead was originally shot @ 25P, and trust me, 1FPS makes a world of difference. If you grab the DVD, watch the movie then watch the deleted scenes which haven't been converted to 24P. Completely different.

hey guys.. just been trolling a bit on this camera.... i read a lot of the first 50 pages, but have lost track since. i found a footage link from someone that may or may not be involved in this thread already... sorry if it's a repeat, or it's someone here... all i downloaded was the first link, which is a mts file. couldn't open it.

as a side note, i love my lumix (panasonic) lx3! hope this camera delivers!

It looks like video because there is no motion blur.
