The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Well, for now we have seen very few pro footage from the GH1, I bet 95% videos we have seen so far were auto or default settings. So GH1 has not shown yet what it is capable of...

all i want to hear are the specs that will hopefully be released sometime soon regarding the potential nikon D400 before i make any decisions.

If there is mention of manual controls and 1080, then im sold regardless of improved jello or compression, cause to me the image the D90 has is sitll the winner compared to the GH1. Panasonic is close but not quite there. Nikon has the look, they just need to amp up the camera with stuff that can be easily added.

Let's get some specs already!

what's interesting is why. the 5d takes the most beautiful pictures, no doubt, with the d90 second in my opinion, but neither have manual controls and 30p is useless, and the d90 uses too much compression. the gh1 has manual control, 24/25p and a much better codec than the d90, but the image just doesn't look as good to me. anybody agree or disagree?

I disagre. I think most folks are fooled into thinking the D90's image is superior because quite frankly it's just blurier. The term people like to use for it is "organic"...but let's be real. It is just blurry. Do this test...with a sharp camcorder shoot something that easily blows out the hilights. Take that same shot but this time blur the image (meaning shoot out of focus a little)...the highlights start to look more organic right? Well...it's not...it's just a blurry mess. That is how I see the D90's image. This effect is no different from using DOF adapters...same type of visual behavior....everything just gets soft...and folks start thinkingg.."Film-Look." I don't think so. Well...if that floats you boat then more power to you but I like a more crisp image to start with...then muddy the crap out of it (as I see fit) in post. My 2C.

Edit: Also...I have to believe....if the GH-1 was not hampered by its limited codec...its picture would be no different...even better...than the 5Dll. I think Panasonic knows this...hence the crippled HDMI.

After seeing Matt's trailer, http://vimeo.com/4293535 (pw: luifer), I understand what he sees in the D90 but this is derived from a well thought out shot list and lighting scheme. If somebody with the same talent level and 'eye' were to put the GH1 through the same paces I'm confident similar results could be got considering the '+'s this camera has.

I know I'm new to posting but I find it odd the total lack of input from Panasonic to this forum. I remember the days of the DVXs where Jan Crittenden and others would be able to help out and provide at least some info. This forum is responsible for a great deal of sales for Panasonic, myself included, and I'm a little baffled by this. Does any of the more senior members know why they're taking a 'hand's off' approach at the moment?

I think it really comes down to the dynamic range
5D better codec, good dynamic range, looks sharp, has filmic look
D90 crappy codec, good dynamic range, looks blurry/muddy, has filmic look
GH1 in between codec, ok dynamic range, looks sharp, not as filmic look

not as filmic look

You better wait until you get your hands on one to make a final judgement on that. I dowlloaded Sonics cats footage, dump it on Edius made an MPEG 2 file and dumped it to a DVD and watch it on the TV set and it looked mighyty good to me. Sweet shallw DOF and sharp.

true dat, puddy tat

i would but i'm still empaled on this fence
lol

If memory serves me right...folks said the 5D didn't have a filmic look either (even after Vincet L's footage). but since then I've seen some very nice looking compositions.

Hi all,
I'm going to be putting up some more straight from the cam footage (Wednesday). PLEASE NOTE, I was just walking around town shooting without much thought to, well pretty much anything. It was night and viewing on the lCD (not ideal I know) the GH1 seems to do pretty well in less light.
I'm am absolutely sure that much, much more talented DVXUSers will be able to do some pretty amazing things with this cam. The argument that the D90 looks more 'filmic' is perhaps relevant but my prediction is that as soon as we see something really laid out like Kholi has in the works this cam is going to blow you away...and, 'yes' this is just the beginning. The proverbial cat is out of the bag and from this point things can only get better.

When I think of the first D90 clips I couldn´t find any "filmic look". Only in the course of time one could see relevant stuff. But sure, what I´ve seen so far, the colors of the D90 look better.

Well I hope you post stuff up that tests the codec because the 'cat out of the bag' won't wash if all you can use this cam for is two people sitting and talking.

We heard and seen codec breaking on exposure changes and motion so lets see footage that puts it through real filmmaking situations not travelogue. Filmic look with pro lighting and setups will come if the camera can handle the basics first.

the d90 shoots cinematic images with great latitude, smooth highlights, pure colors, nice film like shadows, while the gh1 looks like cheap video, consumer hdv/avchd more or less only with less dof.

There's no difference in latitude/range in Video mode between the D90 and GH-1.

Shadows, highlights, pure colors EVERYTHING when setup properly.

I'll tell you one thing, though, you can make it look like the D90.... if you add a lot of softening in post.

Completely disagree: as a former owner of the D90 and having shot a few serious projects with it. The Gh-1 image is superior even in MJPEG recording. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a lot of footage shown that really says this.

Everything you're seeing is from point and shoot application, aside from Hunter's footage which is the nicest looking of it all.

Panasonic wasn't smart about the camera's release. Nikon had photographers go out and shoot stuff, that sold a lot of people. Panasonic just sold the damned camera. Bad idea.

I disagre. I think most folks are fooled
with all due respect i'm not folks and i'm not easily fooled either. i'm a seasoned pro who's shot a feature on the damn thing. :-) you definitely have a point, but that's not what i'm talking about. just scale all the images you're comparing down to say 320x180 so sharpness stops being an issue, you can still see the difference clearly. also, you see the same thing when you compare stills, and d90 stills are anything but soft.

You guys are silly, judging a camera that only four (4) people on these boards have versus one that's been out for a year that people could learn all the tricks and nitpicks too.

Plain out silly.

Hence the reason why I haven't posted a single thing until I know it in and out. Aside from the MJPEG stuff, which was a request just to see how it held up and the grain pattern.

Shouldn't even have posted THAT though.

folks said the 5D didn't have a filmic look either (even after Vincet L's footage)
i don't think it does, but that's mostly because it's 30p and overly processed, i still think it takes stunning pictures that are interesting in themselves. i've no idea what the film look really is, and i'm not trying to achieve it, but i know what the video look is, and i'm sure as hell trying to avoid it.

how did you measure latitude? did you check the shape of the curve too as well as the highlight color fidelity? i think we need to see a subway short already, but just some beautiful stuff shot in a difficult lighting situation would do, maybe a sunny beach or a nighclub? or both?

yeah, the fact that you think the codec has anything to do with it reveals that you've no idea what i'm talking about. or actually i think you do, but you're lost in the same infinite loop as everyone else and it doesn't seem like i can break you out of it no matter how many times i explain that i know and agree about the technical quality of the image.

Mico's fears are WHOLY justified. Because 1080/24P on this camera right now is pretty much useless to me, sad to say. I can't even shift the camera (ala D90 and it's horrid Jello) without compression rearing it's ugly head.

And yeah, I've been told I'm a bit jaded because I use RED but hey, if that's the standard, then cool.

HOWEVER, the 720/60P from this camera can be beaten to snot and it holds up EXTREMELY well, there's no doubt about it.

And, although I was told that 60 > 23.98 was impossible and it wouldn't look the part? I JUST did a test with a human subject, panning, tracking, and I can't tell the difference at ALL.

As far as I'm concerned this is a 720/24P Camera until Panasonic dumps a firmware update to LOCK the bitrate @ 17mbps in 1080/24P (FHD) mode.
