The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

I'm not sold on the GH1, it has a lot going for it but yeah I agree with you. The D90 is going to be replaced next month by either a D400 a GH1 or maybe even a pentax k-7?

If Nikon were to double the bit-rate and give us manual shutter and ISO control I don't think I'd be that interested in the GH1.

Things are moving so fast who knows in a month there could be a DSLR with live uncompressed HDMI out.

yeah, but i don't believe that will happen. if i needed a camera soon i'd probably get a gh1 but as it is now i'll wait.

I love that lantern video. The first on my list. The guy can't shoot straight but the color, the sharpness, the DOF, the way it changes exposure smoothly from inside to outside, and vice-versa. I gets my endorsement hands down. For $1500.00 you can't miss. Then again when something better comes along great, we'll get that one too. At least this GH1 brings with it a lot of improvements on the technology and thats good for all of us.

Yeah we're certainly getting close to having something we can't complain about too much. It isn't quite there look wise but the usability is great.

ohhh snap!
An expert have just said what I was afraid to say ;) I thought it was my inexperienced eyes that were liking the warmth of the D90 better than the GH1 but if Matt thinks the same thing then there must be something real there. The first time I saw Philip Bloom's footage with the D90, it made much more of an impression on me than the GH1's video. When the GH1 is at its best in terms of quality, it has a "Soap Opera" feel to it. That made me decide to wait for the next Nikon hoping they'll fix the compression and manual control.

The thing is though Kholi has both cam's and has done the pepsi challenge and he reckons the Gh1 blows the D90 away.......and he's no videographer. no offence to the videographers.

Matt: the d90 shoots cinematic images with great latitude, smooth highlights, pure colors, nice film like shadows, while the gh1 looks like cheap video, consumer hdv/avchd more or less only with less dof.

Hello Matt,

could you please give a link ore post a picture, that show the special qualities from the D90 compared to the GH1? I try to understand, what you mean.

Regards, URod

GH1 has a lot of setting to tweak this in-camera, and beyond that you can easily tweak it in postprod, it's just gamma curves... On the other hand, you can't save compression from D90 in postprod.

The fact is that we have to look forward. Forget about a firmware on the D90 and hope the D400 is real and improved. Hope the Scarlet materializes sooner than later. Wait for other manufacturers to step up. The truth is that the GH1 is very close to what the real deal is. Throw 1080PN, 720PN and higher bit rate, or maybe AVC Intra if possible, and you have a pretty heavy duty camera. But like I learn sometime ago: Nothing happens before its time.

exactly, so let's see it. i'm not sure why people get so defensive. i just want answers and facts.

i'm afraid it's never that simple. latitude, channel separation and cross talk, and even the simple fact that the conversion from raw to video gamma has already removed a lot, makes it hard.

i don't know. you could check out the trailer for my feature. we shot it in available light, it hardly ever blew out, and the colors remained true throughout, no purple skin tones, no desaturated highlights, very little "false color", and so on. this is the look i want a camera to produce, but i'd obviously like it to be sharper and less compressed too, and manual control would have made things a lot easier.
