The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Yes, I hope you guys can upgrade your Japanese cameras at that point also. I know I have had some products that I had problems doing that with for whatever reason. I hope that is not the case with the GH1.

I doubt Nikon will develop a sensor with optimized readout for video as the GH1 for the D400. Nikon may be waking up to the possibilities and manual control but they've got little to no video codec, so it may well be just a little more control, 1080p MJPEG and not much more.

Unless Canon and Nikon can really move on a dime, it could take 12-18 months before we see a video centric model from them.

Plus, I'm really starting to like the 4/3 format. I've never liked big cameras even in the film days and I'm hoping that this is just the first body in a series of 4/3 video bodies. So I'm leaning to selling my K10d and HV30 and making the 4/3 committment, even if this is not 100% perfect.

This is all the D400 has to do, give us 1080 with slightl ybetter compression, manual controlsand lessen some of the jello, and sold!

Footage anybody? Following the thread faithfully but may have to change my Depends.

Even problematic footage would be welcome as there would sure to be discussion on how to find a remedy and workaround for it. Sure as hell we're all going to have footage that will have us scratching our head and going 'WTF?' a lot.

There is a ton of footage out there on YouTube and others from this camera. It is all crap, but there is a lot out there to see.

Sorry Guys. Gonna be a Bullet Cam / Video Tap until a Firmware or something comes.

OIS = Might be the culprit of SEVERAL oddities happening on my end. In fact, I retried the Car Mount with OIS off and strange as hell -- less jello? Shaking, jittering, but very minimal jello effect. It's really friggin' odd but I think I'm going to be avoiding OIS with this camera.

Also, 720/60P looks to dish away Aliasing for good. I had SEVERAL straight lines in my recent car mount footage but I couldn't spot any aliasing.

Even better, the 720/60P Looked like it held up significantly better as far as the AVCHD compression goes.

I may just completely avoid 1080/24P and stick with 720/60P. I ran some FCP tests just dropping the 720/60P onto the timeline and letting it play back a 23.98 ProRes and I couldn't tell the difference between the 1080/24P Cadence and 720/60P Cadence.

Awesome.

Looks like there's plenty of opportunity for testing many combinations of the GH1's OIS:

How much are we paying you per hour again?

Thanks Peter! I'm gonna try it RIGHT now on my way to get my HPX170...

I forgot it ont he floor at work. LOL. Poor thing...

But here's what I'm experiencing with mode 1 OIS:

Car Mounted, when the vehicle idles (turned on at a stop sign, breaks) the image wobbles around, pure jello. Moving beyond vehicles and buildings the image, at higher speeds, begins to tilt (35mph or 40). THis is in Mode 1

Same situation with the OIS Switch completely off it just jitters, but I seriously can't spot any jello man. This is very strange and incredible if I'm not seeing things.

My goodness...you dig a little deep and you find a ton of new features. This cam should cost much much more...

By the time I get you guys footage you'll know that it's near-to-optimized as far as the image goes. With minor tweaks left to discover.

Are the others getting the same result as Kholi when it comes to 1080p24 vs 720p60. If the 1080 has problems, that's really disappointing.

Also Kholi, would still love to check out even a 5 second clip of 1080p to check out the aliasing.

I suspect that maybe vibrations interfere with the OIS, as its probably designed for low frequency movement that you'd get from hand holding the camera, and in a car the engine is generating vibrations at frequencies that's throwing off the camera's ability to figure out what's going on.... I've seen vibrations negatively affect autofocus on a camera in the past.

This is exactly what I've been saying about the HV20. It exhibits the same behavior in an idling car.
