The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Thanks Peter! I'm gonna try it RIGHT now on my way to get my HPX170...

I forgot it ont he floor at work. LOL. Poor thing...

But here's what I'm experiencing with mode 1 OIS:

Car Mounted, when the vehicle idles (turned on at a stop sign, breaks) the image wobbles around, pure jello. Moving beyond vehicles and buildings the image, at higher speeds, begins to tilt (35mph or 40). THis is in Mode 1

Same situation with the OIS Switch completely off it just jitters, but I seriously can't spot any jello man. This is very strange and incredible if I'm not seeing things.

you DUI?

I love Phil Bloom's quote:

"... I haven’t read the manual yet being a man… I will at some point… "

There are thousands of people who only read English who would _kill_ for that manual, and Phil hasn't even cracked it open yet! :D

It's a shame as I didn't have a CD in my box...I can see the manual on ebay for $500 if you want ;-)

Am going to ask Panny UK to see if they can email me a pdf version so I can share it.

His footage is up on his site. I wonder how much better 25P looks than 24P.

But either way, Hunters and Phillip's footage look good.

So Kholi, so far are you pretty happy the image quality the GH1 spits out? Hunter's and Philip's footage and frame grabs look darn good. I know you stated earlier that you were getting some aliasing, but besides that are you feeling like you would use this thing on a short film or is this thing starting to fall back into the "cool toy" arena that the D90 seems to be for many?

Reason I ask is that the GH1 seems like the real deal. I'm gonna wait awhile to see what the D400 is, just in case, but I don't think Nikon will best the GH1.

I'm really hoping it doesn't fall back into the cool toy bin like the D90. I think that to really find out I need to take it into a narrative or faux narrative environment and treat it like I would on an actual shoot.

You have time to decide. Camera doesn't hit stateside yet.

And I'm pretty sure I'm going to shoot something this weekend. Gimme some more time and we'll find out.

I'm having a bit of an issue with this AVCHD pull down thing, Ithink I'm going to ask the Guys over at Cineform to help me out.

Philip Bloom's stuff looks very nice, even without much testing, if any at all. The 1080p over 60i is basically the same as the HVX200 but with a different codec. Edius 5 does the job very well from the native files of both.

Kholi,

Yea Cineform should do the trick. I've been using it for a while and it does a great job of importing AVCHD and doing reverse telecine to give you 24p footage on import. It's all handled in one step. The Cineform codec is very nice as well.

Damn this thread moves fast.
Haven't got anything to post as of yet (otherwise you'll all be annoyed because...flowers....leaves). Mr. Bloom your footage is tasty.
I am interested to find out for myself about Kholi's 720 anti-jello theory....1080 is jello supreme on fast pans.
I'll be on a train tomorrow which is better than trying to hold the cam on the way back from the dentist today (ugly car crash anyone?). Hopefully, and I do mean hopefully, I'll be able to upload something soon...from the NINJA VILLAGE!!! Yeah baby.
Kholi, I am interested about your feelings on the LCD of this unit. In ample lighting it looks fine but as light becomes less abundant it looks pretty average (not a major issue) but the LCD does also do weird things when zooming out.
Hope all is well with everybody.
Cheers. Sam.

I'm gonna find out today the jello effect in 1080 vs 720. I think they're probably the same and Mega OIS might just be exaggerating it somehow.

As far as the LCD goes, it's adequate. Definitely not the best. When you zoom out I think it's NOT the LCD but the actual LENS. Listen to the 14-140 as you zoom out to 14mm (wide end) and then zoom in a TINY bit. Even though your aperture is locked you can hear it and see it adjusting.

That lens is odd, but not too bad.

Where do I find it again and does it work with FCP? Thanks a lot!

That is most likely the iris. Depending on where the iris is located in the lens formula, when you fix the f-number and start to zoom in, the iris has to open up to keep the f-number fixed.

Panasonic calls the iris 'continuous' but in fact it stops down by increments of 1/8 per stop. Panasonic has spent a lot of effort getting it quiet and the EV stepping as smooth as possible, and according to an interview with Pany officials, the hefty price of the 14-140 is more or less due to this new iris mechanism which earns the 14-140 the "HD" designation. The 7-14mm doesn't have this, so expect the usual EV stepping when zooming.

That wouldn't mean much of anything. Any cam can be "modified" to do seerious work. Though I completely doubt that story. Canon would have had to work out a whole host of issues some of which would make it a whole new camera (meaning beyond a firmware fix). IMO

Um...why would they shoot film? They didn't in the first installment. So this claim might just be possible. Stranger things have happened. Crank 2 was filmed on the A1 (HDV) and HF10 (AVCHD) cams.

My original cause for pause was the claim that the 5Dll was being used as the principal camera. At least that is what your post made it sound like. But for the type of shots you mentioned...I don't see why not.

I worked on "I am Legend" and the first Canon 5D was the camera all the special effects guys used. Everyday sometimes several of them taking pics after every scene, 360 degrees with and without their 3d modeling spheres. So seeing one on a set of a big special effects picture is normal.
