Why would EDIUS use a hardware-accelerated MPEG decoder?

For speed. THere is one built-in to most new graphics cards (and su[pported by DirectX) and it is intended for use with playing back DVD movies.

And, are you sure that Serious Magic is using Panasonic's decoder? I thought they wrote their own?

I'm not sure but there's a very good chance they are also using the graphics card to decode the coefficients in hardware.

Yes, the raylight codec is supurb. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it before the Serious Magic HD Decoder which still has audio timing issues with 24pn & 30pn formats. An added advantage of NLE export to P2 for playback is wear free and buys more time for us to see which HD DVD format will win with the industry.
