The New Raylight

I'm excited about the latest version of Raylight, see this thread/post for an example of the improvement in keying...

I'm REALLY looking forward to being able to author back to P2... for many reasons, not the least of which is showing off finished spots to clients... often they just want a single HD "showing", with the rest of the product's life as DVD. The best method is to simply play off camera to whatever HDTV they have... now we can!

Look forward to doing more with the upgrade... thanks Marcus!

more international greetings???...

well, i order my DVFILM Maker last year.. and the service was excellent!...

the only thing is that i feel sorry about this MAC discrimination.. but.. ill be waiting for RAYLIGHT for MAC... (i understand that is only for Windows... right?)

Congratulations DVFILM !! nice company!

There is no reason for there to be a Raylight for the Mac. FCP does essentially the same job, as does Avid. Raylight is on the PC because that's where it's needed.

Marcus, you've removed the last block for me editing my film in earnest. Thanks a ton for an easy to use and much improved product. A life-saver.

Thanks here too! Updated tutorials would also be great, with attention to the HVX200 workflow for newbies.

Why isn't Panasonic packaging this application with their cameras?! This and P2Genie should be licensed into each HVX kit or offered as Panasonic-branded upgrades.

Great work Marcus - we've just started another taster in 1080p and 720PN framerates with Raymaker and Vegas for HD and SD deliverables. It simply wouldn't have been possible without your app!

I'm sure the authors like the $200/copy they make rather than the $1/copy they'd get if they licensed it to Panasonic.
I'm also sure that Panasonic has a deal with Apple, which is why there are more support on mac for dvcpro hd codecs and no pc one. FCP has full support for P2 and I'm sure the Apple/Panasonic relationship is all about selling a mac for every hvx200. Now that may be true for those people who just want an easy turnkey solution, and aren't technically savvy enough to figure out a workflow using software they're familiar with.

Are you saying Barry nets a buck a copy for all his books that ship with the DVX and HVX? I find it hard to believe that a deal couldn't be struck that would be mutually beneficial.

Look, Panasonic left a major gap in their product support for PC users committed to Premier and Vegas among others. It's an easy way to address the issue with a simple license agreement. If it doesn't work out, then they'll have out clauses to ditch the program. Nobody loses.

100k copies at $12.50 - $25 per license is a lot less work than 10k copies at $195. But that's just me. Forget about the fact that there would likely be no limitations on continuing direct to end-user product sales during the promotion for DVFilm.

Apple paid to be the easiest solution, DVFilm would probably have to pay rather than be paid. Because Apple would want their money back from Panasonic. You can't be exclusive if you give that exclusivity away to everyone. Then its not exclusive.

What is "exclusive" about Apple? EDIUS' integration and workflow is much better than Apple's. AVID supports P2 and even supports direct editing from the card. Raylight and Serious Magic and Cineform have all come up with solutions, and none of 'em paid Panasonic a penny as far as I know.

I really don't understand your point. Apple is far from being the best choice for P2. It's just the most popular one, but that doesn't make it best.

FCP far better edit program than Edius....
And more popular wider user base with more
robust forums etc....
I have both but only use Edius on occasion

Question:
Taking HVX200 footage through Raylight to Premiere . . . by what ways/means can I see full-screen, full-rez output? Does Raylight work with the Blackmagic or AJA cards? Does Premiere having anything like Avid, where is can send the full-screen, full-rez image to the second monitor?

Thanks guys! (and gals)

I've been wanting to get on the Adobe bandwagon, and if Raylight works like they say it does . . . I'd be back onboard with my old friend Adobe (via Raylight). I'm mostly wanting the Production Studio Premium bundle, mainly for AE integration (plus to get all of the current versions of the standards like PS and Illustrator)

I don't know if you can afford it, but look into Axio. Premiere with Axio is rather amazing, and you'd get the full-screen full-res output you're looking for, as well as hardware-accelerated rendering and all the other goodies, in Premiere as well as After Effects and all the rest of the bundle.

From the timeline you can probably preview in Raylight Yellow fullscreen real time to a 2nd monitor.

If you make an MXF file with Raylight P2 Maker, then it can be played back high quality full screen in real time with the Panasonic P2 Viewer (that assumes you have a video card with hardware accelerated video overlay which most new ones do).

Third and maximum quality option is make a P2 card with raylight and play back from the camera. This option also allows you show the movie around provided you have an HD monitor.

Yeah, looking into the Axio . . . they're pretty proud of that thing (high price). No doubt, it looks like a great system. Seems to be the holy grail that I'm after. But I'm just not looking forward to popping down that kinda cash (in addition to the software and box to run it all).

As for making a MXF file . . . that would be fine to check a final look-see, but I'm looking for a full-screen output to have for a large client monitor to view while the editing is happening (and for me to view as well).

So, set me straight . . . Premiere can use a AJA or Blackmagic card and can playback (via HD-SDI or HD Component) full-screen footage that was captured with the respective card . . . but those cards will not be able to playback the Raylight-generated AVI out to the real HD outputs? (sure would solve some things if it did!)

Thanks so much~
Travis

PS Of course, all of this would be a moot point if Adobe would support MXF/P2 (the rep I cornered said that there weren't enough P2 users to justify the engineering cost to develop that functionality. If so, then why does Avid AND FCP have the functionality? If Adobe really wants to play ball with the other two players in the field, they really should step up to the plate on this and at least offer the same functionality that their competition does. Anybody feel me on this?

Avid, FCP, EDIUS, even Pinnacle/Avid Liquid has proper MXF support (but Liquid doesn't support HD with it yet).

Premiere has far fewer excuses now too, because they just bought Serious Magic, who has developed excellent DVCPRO-HD support and an MXF file conversion utility.

Except that it uses the flawed Panasonic decoder

see http://dvfilm.com/raylight/raylightRes.htm

Edius may have the same probelm if it uses a hardware-accelerated MPEG
decoder for DVCProHD

Why would EDIUS use a hardware-accelerated MPEG decoder?

And, are you sure that Serious Magic is using Panasonic's decoder? I thought they wrote their own?
