The new Nikon D4

I think you are about the guy just taking it from YouTube and "grading" it.

It looks bad abd the sound is bad.

I'm going to delete that link.

Thanks Hunter.

The guy who did that Freddie King on youtube finally posted it on Vimeo, and I alerted him on the "graded" version that might have been done without his permission.

Here it is. Though I must say. some of the issues I saw on the Youtube version are still here on his vimeo upload, including the low res image at around 0:19.

I did ask him to share his workflow and settings to "enlighten" us on this new camera.

Heres his vimeo post:

It's very hard to judge the quality when the exported bit rate is extremely low compared to the original files. 4 minute 19 seconds = only 157.53MB. That's before Vimeo compression eats it up even more since you can't download that.

to me, that 0:19 shot also seems to strobe more than the rest of the video, so I'm going to go for... 720p60 put into a 1080p24 timeline without conforming, so: blown up, with frames missing, and with 72º shutter
or maybe my eyes are too tired right now and it's the 2.7x crop, who knows...

more troubling than that is the B&W moire/aliasing around the guitar's hole at 1:36

The Vimeo web version is standard Vimeo 720 HD ( not a Plus or Pro account ), but the file used for the Vimeo upload was 1080 HD, so there's a very good chance that Vimeo is mucking things up.

Until we can either view this as a 1080 HD Vimeo web version or have access to the original file, there's no point in trying to judge the image quality from this video.

Hmm, compression makes it difficult to tell but i still see a ton of aliasing. Not that impressed. But maybe a step forward from the D90. Just nowhere near what is available now, at least for video

Even if we can download that 1080p file, the bit rate is still way too low to give a full evaluation. I really hope it wont take much longer to get native clips so we can really see how they are.

This aliasing might be caused by Vimeo's down-rezzing of the 1080 HD original down to 720 HD. Without seeing the original file in 1080 mode there is now way to be sure.

Its still there even at youtube 1080hd playback. The aliasing shown are distinct stairsteping look typical with the D90 footage. My take on it, I could be wrong, is that this is one of the crop feature mode being used. I asked Joe on the vimeo site about this.

pixel peeping will make you go blind. Nobody can determine what the D4 is capable of until they look at the prores footage recorded on a ninja.

Very nice Johnnie. My favorite footage so far. Really shows some of the beauty as well as some of the limits. Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts. Valuable info.

Thank you for taking the time watching the video and commenting. Appreciated!

Looking at the tramway, there is no skew at all. It seems that the readout is very fast and that the rolling shutter very very low. I am as a Nikon shooter a bid dishearten by the softness of the image. I had hope that a $ 6000 camera with about the same number of pixel than a $ 700 Pana gh2 would have been near in sharpness. Any hope that the hdmi output would add some sharpness or the 1.5 crop version (as it has less pixel to process).

Wow, that rolling shutter is very fast! It does seem a little soft, more so than I expected. Wonder what the sharpening was set at. I'd trade sharpness for rolling shutter myself :)

I'd really like to see how it handles blowouts a bit more, and one thing I find strange is how that light in the dark segment flares. It's interesting how different cameras handle flares.

What I would like to see is how the images change going from full frame to 1.5 to 2.7 [1920 x 1080].

I wonder how that would change the sharpness, detail, low light and jello [although rolling shutter does not seem to be an issue with these new Nikons].

I noticed a lot of softness when using certain lenses with the lightcraft fader nd. Hopefully that's what's making this look less sharp than say the d800 video.

I can't imagine it will be any softer than the 5D especially straight to prores over the HDMI out. The 5D softness with Leica glass is just about right for me aesthetically sans moire and aliasing. Nikon look like they've addressed just about all of our 5D headaches but the jury is still out on moire and aliasing. I'm really interested in seeing how it handles highlight rolloff. The recent Sony sensors have a couple of stops over the Canons.
