The new Nikon D4

Reading forums for 8 years and about 20% in photo/video forums, all i can say is i should buy stock in Canon, Nikon and RED (if they ever go ipo).
In my 40 years of photography no one ever talked of upgrading. just of replacing dead cameras. manufacturers still made money, but nothing like today!
thank you friends for showing me where the bucks really are :)

You mean back in the film days when a camera really held the film and the lens?
When if you needed better images you got better film and/or a better lens?

I still want to see the D4 and 1DX in action.

When there's no new information people start to talk about others things :) Or start speculating as said. I think it always comes down to "Should I up/cross/downgrade from camera A to camera B" and people like to talk about it out loud.

Joe, I'm simply not in a hurry. But when my day of upgrading comes - probably within the next 12 months - and there is no camera that is closer to my understanding of a "perfect" camera, I'll follow your advice with one of the then existing options. Time will tell...:bath:

Hope there are coming some real world reports of the D4, soon to see exactly where it stands.

Hey, "Joe" =)

I hear you, there. If what you've got works, why switch until something tht can be made to work better? Good plan.

Joe

in the days when if you needed a better images your film stock size had to increase by area, as in 35mm for movie and 8X10 sheets for stills ;)
Compared to the digital domain film paradigm is 'charming' but technically challenging. Movies were actually easier, Still was a nightmare of issues.
I THANK THE GODS OF THE DIGITAL DOMAIN the film days are gone.

New video, for now I don't have any idea about the quality with that ugly ugly youtube compression. Can't these corporate shooters put in on some better place for better viewing quality. The second thing is this ultra low dof the 5d and Philip Bloom popularized, ugly, ugly distracting, fed up with those faces where just part of it are in focus. In this case as he moves many times it is his mustache that is in focus and the rest of this face blurry. When you see an interview and when the subject eyes/connection are most of the time not in focus and his mustache is!!! See some aliasing and the image seem to suffer a lot from over-sharpening, don't know if it is the camera, youtube or the setting from the people that edited it.

Detail looks excellent, but there's been a lot of digital sharpening, so how much of it is 'real' I"m not sure. Though given how well it handled the fast motion and action in the 'Why?' video, I've got fairly high hopes.

It looks pretty good to me. Only experience will teach you how to judge how the original footage would look like based on a You Tube showing. It ain't that hard to figure out for a pro.

It looks pretty bad at 1080 at fullscreen. I wonder how he exported the version he sent to YouTube. In my experience, the presets that are usually bundled with, say, Compressor/Adobe Media Encoder, are very basic.

Same here the 1080p version is just terrible. Nikon should use some pro video/film guy when doing their promo videos. I won't judge this video on these footage because I don't know the work flow etc. But esthetically it is a photographer that just forgot that these are not still image, so his subject is a human being and is going to move. At least on the straight talking heads he could have chosen a 20cm dof and not 2 cm one.

There's no real technical write up outside of it was shot using the D4.
I would like to know if it was shot to the cards [I'm guessing it was] and what other settings were used.

All in all I like the un-graded look better and I see a tiny bit aliasing in the shutters and on the guitar strings but I think it looks good.

I know when it comes to “looks”what people look for or want will vary but so far the D4 looks good based on “Little Freddie King” and “Why”.

Little Freddie is a cool too!!
Made his first guitar out of a piece of fence, a cigar box and horse hairs.
"I even got the blues in my shoes"
I love it!!!

Wow, even the downloaded version looks terrible full screen. Lots of muddy details and an artificially sharpened look. And what's up with the sound? It's all distorted.

Also if you really want to peep it on youtube, you can tell it was edited in (and/or) exported as an interlaced format. Either of those cause field problems that could make it have 1/2 the vertical resolution and cause the line flicker and stepping you can see in the youtube.
Wont be long until we all get to peep at some raw files so lets just wait to judge till then : )

Just astounded that someone would play with color correction (and put it up on Vimeo), but downloading a YouTubed version.
