The new Nikon D4

Thanks LiamR, of corse I would not say it kills the Alexa or the Red

As for the 10bit question KyleProhaska,
People keep on saying that HDMI doesn't support 10bit but since the new HDMI 1.3 released in 2007 it does support 10, 12 and 16 bit

Q. What is HDMI’s new Deep Color capability?
The new Deep Color capability lets manufacturers build devices allowing consumers to enjoy billions of colors with incredible visual clarity and detail. HDMI 1.3 supports 10-bit, 12-bit and 16-bit RGB color depths and color space, an upgrade from the 8-bit maximum resolution in previous versions of the HDMI Specification.

So it could ? And it would be cool. Where did you see its does do 422 ? I'm curious...

I am sure in some ways those hybrid dslr will have compromise, but on the other side I will like to know which eng camera will shoot at the low light level of these hdslr. Yes there are compromise but on both side. These dslr bring another set of form factor and functionality which bring it sets of advantages and disadvantages. I see something like the Nikon d4 killing the eng cameras in extreme condition like war zone etc. For low light, portability and ... extreme condition shooting as I don't even know if you have weather seal video camera.

This camera is not meant primarily for the indie filmmaker user. It is meant at first for the photo journalist crowd as a hybrid, first photo then second video, but both very close. For this only it represents incredible value and will fly out of the shelf. This camera will have a profound effect on the pj world because of the mix media world we live in now (paper,tv and internet). These people have been buying the d3 and Canon 1d4 in the $5000/5500 new, so they are literally getting a video camera for free. The only error I think is the on-board codec. They should have implemented at least the broadcast 50 mbit 422, so that the camera is standard compliant. The footage will find it place in many newsroom but the 1dx will feature this 50 mbit 422.

Now as a tool for indie shooters, for me the resolution/sharpness for now is unknown and I think that we will find many more less costly Nikon alternative camera in the near future that will have a lot of the d4 feature.

i think that ably illustrates what i understand as a somewhat contradictory statement on the relative position of dslr's in the market.

who needs pro video?

oh yeah... i do.

Sorry did misread your post, it was early am for me. Also, even if HDMI can do 10-bit (which apparently is true), the D4 doesn't do it.

You can find out the 422 8-bit info right on the Nikon website. Just go read what's freely available.

Yup! I agree. you ought to state the CODEC is uses for your readers in the future. Oh and by the way, the Canon C300 captures on board at 422.
Guys. 10 bit? why? please think of the turnkey editing solution you actually need to take advantage of 10Bit uncompressed out. It's great fun to 'future think' the ULTIMATE indie Film centric movie theater killer cam but it's irrelevant- Movie Theaters are dead.
The question to keep asking ourselves is are nikon targeting serious eng/indie netcast shooters or soccer moms :)

Does anyone know if there are any Canon EF to Nikon F mount adapters that allow control/retain the lenses electronic information (i.e. aperture, shutter, and so forth)?

So a 24mm prime can be a 36mm prime or about a 65mm prime.
Wow!

Me likes.

And of course....a 24. :)
(More like 25mm but still)
Good point BTW. Maybe I'll just buy a good 24mm prime and call it good LOL!

Not to my knowledge. The problem is the size of the "opening" for the Nikon is much smaller. (The mount) Thus Nikon to Canon is abundant. Canon to Nikon ...not so much. (At least back in the days of my D90) Sorry...

Haha why not, the 24mm f1.4G is a mega good lens. Inarguably better than the Canon equivalent. Get a 24 and a 50-1.2 and call it good. You've got a complete set of primes there (almost)!

Damn. I own a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, Sigma 20mm f1.8, and Sigma 30mm f1.4 - all are Canon EF mount. If I took them to Sigma, would it be possible to have the electronic chip at the back changed for Nikon F mount, or would it require something far more complex - i.e. physically changing the lens entirely?

For me, I'm already happy because all my old Nikkors fit the D4 just fine, and my 5D, and my AF100 and GH2 (but I sold those). Those old Nikons are a solid buy for someone like me :)

The answer is no and there will never be one. Read this:

The only lenses you can put on a nikon body are Leica R.
You can also try M42 with a mount that uses a correcting lens but it´s not ideal.

Exactly.. you won't be using any other glass but Nikon mount pretty much. This is exactly why I am frustrated that Canon won't just drop the right Full Frame DSLR, with similar features to D4. The Crop function is AWESOME. Or, why the heck can't we get something like this from Panasonic? I mean I now why.. but dang..

I love all of the Nikon's features, except for the freakin' Nikon mount.

No PL options tears my heart out. =[ And, Can't use Contax Zeiss either????

But Kholi, at least if you are stucked with nikon and leica, you are lucky to be stucked with the best of the best. :cheesy:

Haha! Leica R or M is pricey! I could be happy with those even though my experience is hyper-limited. But, not a fan of Nikon glass--at least not the old stuff. The new stuff's pretty great, 70-200/2.8 IS is tasty, and so's the 14-24/2.8 DG.

"Correcting lenses" are never a good adapter/adaptor ;-) idea...

Miguel, something what has always intrigued me somehow when I read your posts a little bit spread over other forums like Nikon's is how a talent like yours is not in the 4K RED/EPIC/Scarlet's camp, especially after that experience along Mike. Why? If it is allowed to me to wonder about... Are you still in LA or am I outdated? :)

E :-)
