The new Nikon D4

Remember also that Zeiss have interchangeable Nikon mounts available for their CP Cine lenses. So there are cine-lens options available.

Depending on what the D800 turns out to offer, the D4 might actually be my first 'video' camera (and just when I thought I'd FINALLY narrowed it down to the FS100!).

I used to lament the Frankenrig nature of kitting up DSLRs to shoot video, but having seen the rigs most people seem to be shooting Epics and Alexas with at the moment - it hardly seems worth complaining about these days. With all the external monitors, recorders, battery packs etc. that everyone's sticking on their cameras, it seems to simply be de rigueur these days.

What an amazing time to be making motion pictures.

Oh, and apart from old nikons and Leica Rs, do not forget all these lenses which are offered with nikon mount:
- sigma
- tokina
- cosina
- tamron
- zeiss

Not enough for you Kholi?

OK, then add the Schneider Cine Xenars and the Zeiss CPs to that list. More?
Dont´forget about the fabulous Iscoramas...

I own a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, 20mm f1.8, and 30mm f1.4 - all Canon EF. Sorry if this sounds novice, but if I were to take these to Sigma, could I have the mount changed to Nikon F? Or am I way off here?

Probably very difficul and definately not worth it. It will be cheaper and faster just to trade them for the same ones in nikon mount, or sell them on ebay and buy the same ones on nikon mount.

Don't forget though, the sensor crop is only going to effect your FOV so a 24mm lens doesn't become a 64mm lens in terms of the DOF and focal length, you're just cropping in on that full-frame FOV into a smaller portion.

???

even if HDMI can do 10-bit (which apparently is true), the D4 doesn't do it.

You can find out the 422 8-bit info right on the Nikon website. Just go read what's freely available.

Sorry to insist but I do read all specs that are freely available from Nikon, I probably missed it and you are probably right but I would just like to know if that statement is a 1000% sure and where it comes from because I don't see it anywhere

Its just that if the hdmi output does do 422 and if it might do 10bit its good enough to wait and be sure before buying cams like a F3 , C300 or a fs100....

Thanks

It's 8 bit, 4:2:2

I also have some old Helios Lenses in Nikon Mount (Kiev Nikon lenses), and some Vivitars with Nikon mounts.

That night low light vid has some disappointing crunch in the blacks...hopefully a product of silly high iso. Assuming it's legit of course - FenchelJanisch have a deserved reputation for sneakiness.

I think I would rather wait until we're able to download higher quality samples than the compressed versions on YouTube and Vimeo. Even better if it wont be long until we get native samples for us to chew to bits.

Higher quality will look a little better when pixel peeping, but won't bring back dr in that clip

Sorry was out of it when I wrote that. I used the wrong term when i said "focal length." What I meant was the dynamics of the lens are still going to function like a 24mm lens so although the DOF WILL change (since the crop isn't just a FOV change it's actually like shooting with a brand new sensor on the cam), it's still the DOF that a 24mm lens will given at that crop (whichever you choose) so a 24mm lens in FX mode on the D4 will give full-frame DOF and FOV, and at the longest 2.7 crop mode, the FOV will be like a 65mm lens, and the DOF will be cut down significantly due to the sensors "new" size, but you're still using a 24mm lens. What you're getting is the extended focal length without the other changes in the image, the biggest one being how the lens is handling the compression (in Z-space) of the image (things in the foreground and background).

Having a 24mm lens with the crop modes is all well and good for certain effect, but there's a reason people buy 50mm lenses and 200mm lenses and anything else...because they all do different things to the image, they don't just let you "zoom in" farther LOL.

For those asking if it's 422 8-bit or not...YES.

"Built-in HDMI lets you view footage on an external monitor or record uncompressed 8-bit 4.2.2 footage directly to an external recording device."

Don't judge it from Youtube...also, we have zero idea what kind of picture profiles were used. Canon 5D/7D etc. on Standard profile would've done the same thing.

Don't judge what from youtube? DR? A less compressed version of this won't show more detail in the blacks. As for picture profile, I agree.
