The new Nikon D4

It seems that the rumored Nikon D4 is finally confirmed http://nikonrumors.com/2012/01/05/nikon-d4-leaked-in-french-magazine.aspx/#more-29976 . It has been published I think 1 day too soon. On the video it translate like this

full hd format in h.624, many framerate nd with some first like (entry in line, headphone, sound monitoring and vumeter, uncompressed hdmi that can e use by external recorder(or clean that can be recorded), transition to black...

I don't know if the h.624 is not a typing error. Lets see what Nikon has for us. Apparently they have been investing in a big motorcycle advert in Chicago city center, where the emphasis was a lot on video.

Sounds awesome if it all pans out to be true...

One question though. With the uncompressed output... what are people going to use as a scapegoat for labeling this cameras as "not professional" now? Continue with the "shallow DOF is cliche" or maybe FF35 is not the "standard" and has no place in "professional" productions. Could also be something like the body is too small and light, leading to some new negative buzz-word like "feather-cam". Or will it be something new?

Man, the pretentious film luddites must really be scratching thier heads...

:cheesy: haha... I joke, but you guys know it's gonna happen!

Consider this your first and only warning against inciting a flame war on this topic.

2012 is going to be a crazy year for DSLR's.
We should have the Nikon D4 and Canon 1DX plus we may get replacements for the 7D, 5DII.
Rumored Nikon D800 and Sony A99.

I know a few people who've been waiting for Nikon to produce a “5DII” could this be it...

The uncompressed output is another advancement in the HDslr/large sensor affordable camera market. While with some tricks it is possible on the gh2 already. (I am not sure about the 25p in the new gh2 firmware 1.1). For it to be of any real use, it will have to be at least with proper down-sampling like on the gh2. It has about the same pixel count than the gh2 so there are some hope, as the underlying hardware will be much more powerful with the new xpeed processor. Read speed also could be faster so as to reduce rolling shutter. The ISO will be definitely better.

I think that it will compete more against the 1dx. While many think that rumored high megapixel D800 is the replacement for the d700, I think it is more of the d4x replacement. I think, we will find a d701 with the same chip than this d4 at the $ 2500/3000 range with slower speed and smaller body. The reason is that it is a home made Nikon sensor and Nikon will beneficiate a lot more in economies of scale by producing in the hundred of thousand than in the tens of thousand sensors. I think they just decided to put the higher megapixel camera in between the high ISO ones. Nikon has received a lot of slack from its users because in the D3/d3x/d700 line, the studio/landscape photographers were left in the dark unless they had $ 8000. While you could get high megapixel camera for $ 2500/3000 in the Canon and Sony line.

Not at $6,000 it's not. And no one with a lot of EOS glass wants to use an adapter. Perhaps willing if the camera is absolutely killer for the price, otherwise not so much.

Here I go again: What do you understand by UNCOMPRESSED OUTPUT? Because all live outputs from most cameras are uncompressed. Or perhaps... what they mean is CLEAN output and they don´t know what they're saying?

Yea until the thing is officially release or close and we have some no BS information, I'm steering clear of all threads pertaining to this. It's the same old thing over and over again. Complaints, bashing, whining, arguments over what's better, etc.

No thanks. Cool to hear Nikon possibly getting into the fight, but I'll reserve my opinion for later when it's not all smoke and mirrors.

You speak sense.

Headphone jack and sound monitoring! My god, how did they manage that technological feat?!! Get a f'ing clue Canon!!! Really, you're going to allow the 1DX to show up without a headphone jack? Really?

It took years of work, hundreds of lives, and billions of dollars but now the dream is true - for $6,000 you too can have a stills camera with a portable AM radio headphone jack.

Live the dream.

The sad thing is that Nikon thought nothing of adding a headphone jack because it was the logical, obvious and easy thing to do because they have no video line to protect. Meanwhile Canon was sitting there with their finger in their nose thinking "Gee, if we put a headphone jack in there, people may not buy our C300." Kinda disgusting. .....still looking forward to my C300. LOL

Yep... those Nikkor primes are looking pretty nice right about now.

That's the way business works. Lets not pretend that if Canon's bottom line secured our salary that we wouldn't reserve the headphone jack ourselves. Perspective people...perspective. Not saying I don't agree a headphone jack is a small thing to ask for, but in the grand scope of a company with a release plan in multiple markets...it's not as easy as one might think.

If people here spent less time whining about what their low budget camera doesn't have and spent more time making money, they'd be able to afford the higher end cameras. Or go become a billionaire and invent your own industry shaking camera like Jannard did. Otherwise, what's the use whining?

More so that that the c300 is 8 bit and has no intra-frame codec, so the differentiating factor was the $ 5, headphone jack ;-)

Sad joke aside, lets keep it more focus on the d4 and keep the Canon c300 complain to its own thread.

Yes, but where did it get them? Now the 1DX without a headphone jack has to compete with the D4 with sound monitoring. This feature is no small thing for photographers looking to get into cinema. At least this has guaranteed that the 4K Canon cinema camera that will be released later this year will have sound monitoring.

Well..this (if true) will make things interesting. Speaking of perspective.

So many say that there are many other issues beside sound I/O that separate DSLR video from dedicated video cameras. Form factor, lack of power zoom, frankenrigs and strap on viewfinders etc...etc etc

Ok..right. If so, the addition of a lousy headphone jack shouldn't be such a big market segment disruption. And it's not unheard of for these companies to offer proprietary breakout adapters. I bet a very inexpensive to design/build audio breakout box could have made money for these companies...and their job protecting employees.
