The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

Not to derail the topic but I'm just curious of anyone has followed xi3 because literally my first thought when seeing the new Mac pro was "wow, apple didn't set the trend for once"

http://xi3.com/

Youll notice some strikingly similar hardware arrangements (ie x7a)

Need CUDA? Not saying you don't use it, but it's just an nvidia proprietary thing.

Funny how Apple-fans are suddenly against "proprietary" things. Well stop using Macs then.

Like it or not but CUDA is still quite useful and Nvidia cards do run OpenCL pretty well.

About this new macpro...I don't get it. It looks beautiful, great design and great marketing. But you can get better specced pc's at the moment with probably a lot cheaper prices (with 16 cores, 4 gpus and so much memory that this mac pales) so... what's the deal here? Everybody so in love with OS X? Luckily I hate OS X so I have no dilemmas. :)

then move on. You made your mind up. Enjoy windows 8 or whatever. Let the rest of us drive 3 4k monitors out of the silly tube while editing 4k and rending the edit simultaneously in the background with what is built in that silly looking tube. If we want more power, we can attach all sorts of lovely devices (36 of them in fact) while you run out of slots. PC's can't even hot swap lightning bolt (thunderbolt) yet, can they? Let Apple fans waste their money all they want, because we really don't give twoo sheets once the product is working for us. Walk into any coffee shop with Wi-fi. What do you see? MacBooks! Everywhere. Were the creatives live and love. MOVE ON if you think this computer is not for you. It's for the rest of us who support innovation and progress. Think iPod, Ipad, iPhone, iTunes.... Bet ya have them all.......

im not in love with the look of this thing (will probably grow on me though) but really if it rocks then im not going to care much how it looks.

i can appreciate that this thing could be transported easily like dustylense said.

could be a cable mess in the back but so is my computer now.

id rather have internal storage but ill get over it if the computer performs great.

i know OpenCl looks like its becoming more optimized in the future softwares but if i go to PP then i was planning on getting a CUDA card for my current macpro. seems the jury is out as to the new TB2 being adequate for external chassis for GPU's. this could make it a very tough sell for people who need CUDA.

still with 12 gigs of VRAM? holy ****! Resolve seems to not be an issue going to v10. will Adobe work to optimize OpenCL more in the future? is the new version of PP coming out in the newer CC already more optimized for OpenCL than CS6 was? anyone know this?

if its priced similar to macpro's of the past id be able to live with that.

Cuda is old. nuff about that.

I'm sitting in a hotel in AZ right now. Behind me is an media center that has what, Iphone hook ups. Not android blackdingleberry hook ups. I'm sitting with my Iphone 5, Ipad 3 and MBPr. I'm listening to my iTunes. I can't wait to unpack my Macpro from the small case and probaly link it to my Ipad4 as a monitor and go through todays shoot in the hotel. That is what will happen.

Cables? Really? worried about cables? I go home and connect a single TB cable to my MBPr (that is attached to my two 27in TB monitors) and up pops my 10TB raid that is popping 800 MB/sec that is mirrored to another 20TB's popping 600 MBs/sec. ONE CABLE that I have to worry about. The rest are neatly tucked away and I can't even see them as the devices are 15ft away from my computer in an cabinet that I air-condition. Cables???? LOL.

Next, this MacPro will be USA built. I'll buy it just for that very reason and support jobs coming home.

Go to any mall with an Apple Store. The Apple store is always the busiest. Every time I walk into the Apple store I open FCPX and poo poo up the Audi commercial loaded on it. Can't wait to do that on the Mac Pro......

will this new beast works nicely with Davinci Resolve 9 & 10? Since I am on the BMCC bandwagon now and starts to love the color and combination with my current iMac (2013).

yes. It will smoke the BMC, all of them.
Directly from Apple website:
Not only does it feature a state-of-the-art AMD FirePro workstation-class GPU with up to 6GB of dedicated VRAM — it features two of them. With all that power, you’ll be able to do things like seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video while simultaneously rendering effects in the background — and still have enough power to connect up to three high-resolution 4K displays

Think about that???? Built into that silly looking tube!!!!!

Lets crush that Adobe fanboi / pc myth straight away....

Please... we are all sorry that a lot of guys are angry that their tech apparently for some reason out of the blue is outdated and old, but that's how's it's been ALWAYS!.
We can see the same bulls*%t talk going on in the HD vs 4K section "we don't need it...." "it doesn't work with what we have / what options there are".

Well guess what, that's a matter of months.

Check out the CHEAP Thunderbolt raids coming out this year. Caldigital has one that is migthy interesting. I could easily see myself racking up a couple of these with SSDs inside.

Progress for the sake of progress. Let's get some speed into these beasts and let's move on so we can hit 4K delivery faster.

This is jaw dropping.

Minimalistic design. Love it. Apple is now back with a bang.

Imagine carrying this thing in my backpack and editing 4K stuff in the forests. Wow!

yes, that s3 looks very nice. I want one, but once adobe supports ATI. Price point looks low.

and yes, the new mpro looks very nice. Price will be my determing factor. I personally can't spend $4k to run video editing software. My 2008 mpro is getting pretty old in the tooth.

Thanks, though I'll stay out of 8 and keep 7.

It's funny how 4k has actually been completely available to everybody for awhile but now it's suddenly "ooh and aah" because it reads in the Apple adds. What gives? AMD cards have been able to output 4k for a long time now. For example the 7970. Also Nvidia cards have had that support too, like the GTX680. It's basically a part of HDMI/Displayport specs. Also I've had the GTX690 for a long time and have been happily driving Resolve out of it's two GPU's. So .. am I supposed to be impressed?

As someone who tries to think rationally, that just seems like fanboy behaviour. Yes, the adds are cool and the design is great. Apple does make great iPhones and iBooks. But PROFESSIONAL solutions? I don't think so. Not since they forgot the previous macpro.

Honestly, at the end of the day, it's about productivity. I feel 100% that I get more done in my work day because of OSX. I use FCPX right now, and I edit while importing and it's a fast amazing workflow. People can talk all day about how they have maybe 5% more CPU speed than the Mac alternative, but as far as I can tell, the efficiency of OSX runs circles around Windows 8 and more than makes up for the difference.

CUDA is fine, my point was that it is kind of a thing now, but probably not a thing for very long.

Hi,

We have been testing with DaVinci Resolve 10 builds and this screams. Its amazing and those GPUs are incredible powerful. I am not sure what I can say as I am only going off what Apple has talked about publicly here in the keynote for what I can say right now, however there is a whole new OpenCL and DaVinci Resolve 10 has had a lot of performance work done to integrate it and its really really fast. Those GPUs are very powerful and have lots of GPU memory so this is the Mac we have been waiting for! We have lots of Thunderbolt products too so video in and out is taken care of.

We will have more details once the guys get back from WWDC and we get some more info from Apple on what we can talk about etc.

Overall we could not be happier!

And that is typical of the Apple mindset (not you, DL, but Apple).

"WE will determine what YOU need."

This is exactly Apple's - mainly, Steve Jobs - philosophy. They make things you will want and need. Even if you don't know it yet. They don't ask consumers what they want.
Who needed an iPad before Apple created them? Now, there's millions of tablets on the market.
So far, it's hard to argue with the success of their philosophy.

And the dimensions of the new Mac Pro make it about the size of a large roll of paper towels. Pretty amazing.

That has got to be the stupidest form factor ever. I don't need a spaceship shaped column. There isn't any way that thing could be rack mounted or put in a road case. Any extra cards will have to be in an external enclosure now. Oh boy, one more thing to hook up. Sorry, but I think this thing is a joke from a practicality standpoint.

Sure would be nice if they made a rack mount version but I doubt it tremendously.

Yeah, who would design a cylindrical computer? What was Apple thinking? it'll never work.

This kind of mindset is just FCPX hate. The "old" Mac Pro and Final Cut 7 were never dissed for being a "non-professional" solution. But people have foundlessly berated FCPX so hard, now Apple "isn't for professionals".

Well get with the times. Everyone's original moanings about FCPX have all been fixed long ago. Lots of reports of people using it for massive professional projects. I personally make and deliver a weekly 30min HD broadcast to a Minneapolis TV station all in FCPX with embedded CC and everything. I had to fight with the station just to get long form HD.

Apple's FCPX and this new Mac Pro are 100% "professional" products.
