The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

It's a clever design to make the core function this well while offloading the options to peripherals. I'm liking the aesthetic as it looks more like a jet engine to me. I'm sure there will be a whole bunch of black tubelike boxes for PC that have zero functional reason soon enough. Those will look like trashcans.
I'm not so sure that the price will really be that much more, or even any more than the current MacPro. Other than the two graphics cards, what's really increasing the cost here? Maybe some of the new tech will come with a slight premium but it's all just guesswork until these are actually offered for sale.

You heaving a field day Dusty, haven't you?
Darn right! Hey frank, go set your Bmc next to an MacBook? Tell me, see any similarities? Same finish, same rubber, touch screen like an iPhone (probably what your reading this on), thunderbolt port. Why is that?

If the new MacPro looked like a doughnut would you buy it frank?

For high end professional use I need many GPU cards that I can upgrade without buying a new computer - things like RedRockets, raid cards, etc and I need CUDA. Thunderbolt 2 is not a fast enough pipeline to run GPU cards, except at crippled speed, and thsi stupid thing does not seem to have PCI slots at all! What an annoying toy this new Mac Pro is. I am switching to PC.

C'mon over, the water's fine Rob.

Would I be able to plug in my retina macbook pro and use it's display, mouse, and keyboard, with the mac pro everything else? Would be really nice if I could just plug it in to render/export.

If CUDA is a must have for you then this probably isn't the machine for you. Personally I can see no reason why anyone would run Adobe on a mac in the first place if you edite in Preiere - and this just my opinion, unless you feel theres something to be gained by running MACOS. On the other hand theres those of us that run AE and PS as periphery software to FCPX. I currently run Resolve so have a need for CUDA as well, but with opencl being more widely supported by blackmagic in resolve down the line, that will become moot.

On first viewing I do have some concern over pcie cards I currently use. They could go to external cases. I currently use Caldigit HD Element Raid 5 on a propriety CALDigit raid card. This means I will have to create another external set up for the RAID card, that has thunderbolt. What is the effect on performance? Asking as I actually don't know - Im sure those answers will come through over the next few months as more people dig into this, so I can let others create the info I need rather than digging myself.

I dont mind a large shift in thinking and I guess we will all see how this washes out.

The copy seems to imply that the shape helps with cooling, or something.

All the components share a single heat sink which is a hollow aluminum shaft that makes up the center of the tube. Heat, of course, naturally rises and a single fan sits atop the machine to help with air circulation. The industrial design of the machine is very interesting. It's very clean looking... until you have to hang 87 external devices off of it to get in everything you need. :)

It is absolutely great to see them doing something again that isn't all about the mainstream consumer. Maybe future Apple editing software won't all be about the mainstream consumer either.

I'm liking the specs, but I really don't like the form factor. I'm already a little irked by how much external gear I have to attach to my new iMac to make it usable. I thought the future was about minimising clutter. Miniaturisation is all well and good, but when it comes at the expense of complexity, I don't think that's a good thing. The all-in-one design of the previous Mac Pro was one of it's greatest appeals IMO.

I don't see the complexity you guys are talking about.... I see freedom of choice. The thunderbolt raids coming this year, will suit this machine nicely and keep you running swiftly.
Price... well seeing how Apple every single time has been able to just swap products and keep the price, I dont see price as an issue. One could even hope they would be smart and lower it a bit seeing we would have spend that little extra on storage etc.

I think this has potential, and I really can't be swayed by the poor suckers who are angry that their big investments are becoming outdated because of tech evolution.... I mean come on... learn to factor that into your production line -.-

Need CUDA? Not saying you don't use it, but it's just an nvidia proprietary thing. Very similar to how they operate for games, they pay studios to prefer and lock in there hardware with optimizations. OpenCL and so forth will/does replace it assuming software vendors dont stay exclusive to nvidia. Adobe right now forces users to buy nvidia hardware to get optimization but will they even stay with that? OpenCL is a format for that crosses brand boundaries.

Im just saying that if the new Mac Pro was sitting in your office at this moment, and couldn't run your software accelerated doesn't mean it won't be able to upon release.

I don't buy computers by how they look.
And as long as I don't have to pay for them, I'm brand/OS agnostic.

Personally I prefer a rackmount form factor though.
But even I have to admit, the thing looks pretty Star Wars cool, when the hull is removed.

Not to go all "conspiracy theory" here but something like that would sure make a hell of a nice hub for a sweet home theater....4k ready....basically a big, fast video card in a tiny form factor....super quiet....
