The new Mac Pro coming later this year (take a look).

And that is typical of the Apple mindset (not you, DL, but Apple).

"WE will determine what YOU need."
You're thinking in the box.

Expand in studio all you want with external chassis. Then, pack up your Mac Pro that will drive 4K easily as is and take it to set in a shoebox.

Apple could make a second enclosure just like this one, but mostly empty inside for expansion cards or whatnot, even with two of these things on the table it'd be all very compact.

Does this thing have an SDXC card reader on it?

It says that when you spin it the ports light up, but what happens to all your cables that are already hooked up to ports, is it wrenching on the jacks doing that?

I agree with dusty and it's NOT because I'm an Apple fanboy. I havent changed my icon since about 2008, and I've got a home-built PC running Windows 8 (which is pretty underwhelming).

What would you want to put in it? A better graphics card? It's got two great ones already. An I/O device? You don't need anything better than the SIX 20Gb/s Bi-Directional ports on the back. More storage? Attach storage, fill it, and remove it easily with external hardware.

I can't imagine what else you want to install in it that it doesn't provide for already. If you see Thunderbolt as being PCIExpress, but faster, then you get the picture and this thing makes sense.

First, no. It has USB 3 ports, so get a sweet dongle and your good to go.

Secondly, two words: Leave slack.

Card reader? What for? I already own a bunch of ext. card readers that accept everything under the sun. I'd rather have that junk in my desk drawer when I need it and not in the computer all the time.

The fact that it spins is of course gimmicky, but I wouldn't exactly set the computer up such, that all the cables are stretched to their limits either. Better than reaching around back in any case.

edit:Considering its targeted as a pro workstation, chances are the storage solution has been solved even before anyone buys it, in the form of a large external disk array that probably has more than a few TB's of redundant storage... people who shop for this level of gear should already have that covered.

+1.

As I said, set all that up at home. Then while on set take what is packed in it and a small TB raid along. It will fit and a shoebox. It will drive and edit 4k with 3 4k monitors attached OUT OF THE TUBE (get it, the tube and not the box, where people are stuck). Expand all you want in studio with 6 20gb/sec ports. SIX! Up to 36 devices will be able to daisy chain! Oh, while your at it, you all better get real real real used to FCPX.

Grant from Blackmagic Design:
"We have been testing with DaVinci Resolve 10 builds and this screams. Its amazing and those GPUs are incredible powerful. I am not sure what I can say as I am only going off what Apple has talked about publicly here in the keynote for what I can say right now, however there is a whole new OpenCL and DaVinci Resolve 10 has had a lot of performance work done to integrate it and its really really fast. Those GPUs are very powerful and have lots of GPU memory so this is the Mac we have been waiting for! We have lots of Thunderbolt products too so video in and out is taken care of.
We will have more details once the guys get back from WWDC and we get some more info from Apple on what we can talk about etc.

Overall we could not be happier!"

I feel Apple missed out by not having a matching expansion chassi to go with it. Would have easily answered all those complaining about lack of expansion. What options for thunderbolt expansion chasis are out there now?

Not surprised this is a contentious design since the old one had some of the best-designed expansion of its day.

That said, they're obviously betting big on Thunderbolt as the future of computer expansion, and I can't really argue with that. For legacy gear, Sonnet and Magma make Thunderbolt PCIe chasses. Most of the new tech from Blackmagic and AJA come in Thunderbolt varieties, and it'll only move more in that direction.

The only really limiting factor over the last design that I can see is its proprietary graphics card, but they seem to have picked a good one to start with. And the aftermarket Mac graphics card market was never exactly booming...

I'm really hoping that with the efficiencies created by such a small, engineered design, they'll be able to bring this in at a lower price point— Something like $1699 for an entry model (maybe 4-core CPU and single GPU rather than the 12-core/dual GPU beast they showed today) would be huge.

For as much as this thing is going to cost, we should at least have a Nvidea option, never been a fan of anything ATi.....

Third parties will do that. All sorts of expansion chassis are out there. Now start thinking about how many will come because the Macpro finally got updated? LOTS!

So that's where they keep Darth Vader's ashes.

I bet third party manufacturers are already working on R2D2 mods.

Yell at Nvidia. ATI has a pretty decent coup at the moment with every next-gen console is AMD/ATI, and now the Mac Pro. I think ATI has been more aggressive with their pricing model (and their GPU hardware has matched or bettered Nvidia's).

"Hey apple support?

Yeah, it's Kevin again...

Yup, they threw away a milkshake in my computer again.

I know! third time this month!"
