The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

barry.. certainly the hdv beats the dvx in an interlaced environment, but are you saying that even after deinterlacing to progressive for film out or anything else the hdv rez is still higher than the dvx? i only meant the rez thing in terms of a film out, where the dvx retains its full progressive rez, and the hdv would be cut in half, and recompressed(from mpg..yuck) .. in that regard , do you think it would still beat the dvx for rez though? props to it if it does, but i still think its poop of course..lol :)

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

The JVC shoots true progressive, 1280 x 720. The raw resolution smokes the DVX's resolution (and all other SD cameras, including Digital Betacam's) right off the mark.

The HDV spec includes two resolutions: 1440 x 1080 interlaced, and 1280 x 720 progressive. At 1280 x 720, you're talking about close to a million pixels, or about 2.7 times as many pixels as standard-def. I've shot the same subject with both cameras, and have no doubt: HDV is real high resolution. Up-rezzing the SD video with S-Spline Pro can get you something that looks close to the same rez, but it's not "true" resolution, which is what the HDV cameras will deliver.

With that said, it must also be said that the JVC HD1 picture looks awful. It's thin, plasticky, pale, washed-out, no latitude whatsoever, and a propensity towards truly horrific MPEG artifacts and edge enhancement. BUT: it's high-res. Startlingly high-res, when you put it side-by-side against a Digital Betacam or a DVX (like we did, A/B-switching the two). The DVX looks better in every way but one: resolution.

So, with a next-generation HDV camera, three real CCD's, actual ability to control the picture, etc... that would be an interesting camera. Today's HD1/HD10 are consumer jokes that cannot be used in a professional environment. But if JVC stuffed some HDV chips into their DV5000U, or Panasonic put HDV chips in the DVX100A body, man, that would be a serious camera.

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

aha. so therse no need to deitnerlace. i didnt realize the cam shot progressivly as an option.  !  i really hope that panasonic would go the way of using removeable  firewire DTD storage , and real hd compression instead of  giving us mpg nightmares though..(somthing along the lines of a wm9 ..or wm10 ..or whatever by then would be cool, and i could deal with that) either way though the futrue is bright! thats for sure! in fact where we are now is bright.. :)

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

It shoots progressively, but isnt it 30p? So you'd still have to do some form of digital manipulation to get it onto film, no?

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

Well, yes, but let's clarify: HDV is not the JVC, and the JVC is only a small part of HDV.

So while the JVC shoots at 30P only, and is therefore useless for a film transfer, the HDV spec includes the option to shoot 720/25P (which would transfer quite nicely) and 1080/60i (which can also be transferred to film quite nicely, although with some de-interlacing/frame blending).

Again, even though the HD1 can shoot true progressive, it is a functionally useless tool for an aspiring filmmaker because of the 30P-only situation. I'm thinking about future HDV cameras, which might be more film-friendly (through 25P or 60i).

Barry, how early (or how late) do you expect a film friendly HDV to be on the market....Few Years ???

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

And an even more improtant question is ...

by what time you guys think the DVX100 would be a REDUNDANT CAMERA

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

I don't think we'll see a real, useful, film-friendly prosumer HD camera for a while yet. Sony and Canon have already declared their intentions, by going with HDV, which is film-unfriendly. Panasonic is undeclared, so perhaps our best hope lies with them -- but with the success of the DVX and the recent launch of the SDX, I don't expect them to rush any new product to market.

(of course, they stunned me by releasing the 100A so quickly, so maybe they will do it again!)

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

So, in ur view, how film-unfriendly would be the new Sony HDV announced yesterday...its a 3ccd HDV...not an HD...am I right??

From its look it does not feel too unfriendly .... i think.

Re: The New Camera that Beats the DVX100A

If it's 1080/60i, it'll be film-friendly-enough. People have been shooting movies on interlaced PD150's and transferring 'em to film for quite a while. Having 5x as many pixels isn't going to hurt.
